Rumba, rumba how do I hate thee, let me count the ways. Hahaha I don't hate ALL rumbas, I hate rumbas like that because;
1. It sounds like a sleezy night club where women have to keep an eye on their drinks.
2. It lacks a soul, it's whole existence is only for the purpose of helping morons procreate.
3. It reeks of men in suites who don't care about music getting rich off of music.
4. Commercialized objectification of women beyond the point that I'm comfortable with. (You said "how can YOU" me in this instance.)
5. Reinforces bad stereo types about Latin folk.
6. It's so cheesy I need to check my cholesterol after hearing it.
A few more and I'd have a Johnny Carson skit there......
[:D]

Those are the exact 6 reasons I love rumba!

Leñador -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (Apr. 19 2016 3:06:06)

You're the guy slowing traffic down to stare at terrible car accidents aren't you!?!? [:D]

rombsix -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (Apr. 19 2016 4:41:22)

What the **** was that, Mark? Seriously? It's like finding the crappiest example of any palo and saying "How can anyone not like...?"

You been drinking lately? Your posts have taken a different direction in the past few days... First Paco dancing bachata, and now this? [:D]

That maybe was the worst Rumbas I´ve ever heard!! Leñador really nailed the descripcion on that one [&:]
I have to keep up with loads of Rumbas in the Peña, really didn´t like them in the beginning[:'(] I kinda got used to them now, everyone really loves Los Chichos y los Chunguitos, Triana etc. Fridaynight usually starts with 2 Hours(!!) of Rumbas and Sevillanas, gets everyone in the mood and drinking.
It´s nice for a while, but too long and they can drive me completly mad!
Great warmup for the righthand though.

If you do not like Rumba, you are not a real flamenco......it is just like cante Jondo. [;)]

El Kiko -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 12:52:14)

yes i agree with most of thoses reasons ...
I dont not like rumba .. just not too much ...
some rumbas by great players are pretty good ...doesnt our own Ricardo have a rumba on his album i learned once ...?

its just the commercialness of it that i dont like .... the bad music gets out ...
over here , if you meet anyone at all that has heard of the word FLAMENCO ..as oppose to SPANISH SOUNDING MUSIC ....then within the first 45 seconds of the conversation get ready for

...."Spanish ...you mean like the GYPSY KINGS ? clap clap //..Bambolero !! Bambolero la bamba ...yeah I really like Spanish music ....""

BarkellWH -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 13:31:29)

Listening to rumba is a lot like listening to mariachi music in some sleazy watering hole in Guadalajara, or in a just-as-sleazy watering hole in the U.S. on Cinco de Mayo. A little bit goes a long way. It gets on your nerves and quickly becomes BORING.

El Kiko -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 14:08:57)

worst bit is my wife heard it from the next room and came saying

H....,,what are you listening to????.....

Friends - it is always easier to poke fun at matters rather than to try and understand what they really are. I would like for any of you (that do not do guitar gigs for a living) to upload a video with a well-executed, complex rumba strumming pattern that is going at a fast tempo for 5 continuous minutes. If any of you can do so, then we'll resume the mockery on this thread. I think that if none of you can do so, then we ought to lock/delete this thread.

I'm saddened by the degree of cynicism that has come to engulf the majority of topics on the foro nowadays.

Actually, Ramzi, some of us can strum a pretty good Rumba. But that's not the topic of this thread. The topic of this thread is, "How Can Anyone Not Like Rumba." The question comes down to one of taste. For some of us, even those of us who can strum rumba, rumba quickly becomes boring. I neither play it nor listen to it much because to me it lacks variety and, indeed, is boring compared to other forms of flamenco. (I hesitate to call it a "palo" because I don't think it is, although I realize there are different opinions on that score.)

Finally, the last time I checked, Simon determines whether or not a thread should be locked/deleted. Threads are not locked or deleted because some Foro member takes umbrage at opinions with which he disagrees.

El Kiko -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 16:28:13)

yes ...Barkell... i agree.... and i like your use of the word ' Umbrage '....i havent heard a good umbrage for a while ...
and any way on my YOUTUBe page i have a rumba which is about 4 mins long ...and like some others the final bit gets faster ....
is it a palo ....i suppose so ...the reason i learned a few rumbas is cos people like them ,,they're dancy...

theres good ones and bad ones ... where you draw that line is up to you ...
I would have a bit of umbrage ([;)]) against the really cheesy cheap commercial ones
but i recommend everyone to practice a bit of rumba stumming every once in a while to loosen the wrist and not take umbridge

heres aone thats seems ok ....the guy on the right shows a lot of promise , he;s pretty good ....

Morante -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 16:31:41)

a little more class

koenie17 -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 16:47:28)

Very much agree with Ramzi, Rumba strumming can be a real challenge and definately will improve your flamenco playing in general. Most of the examples you guys posted are like the worst possible examples for Rumbas! I´d refer to them as pop music or flamenquito.

Here´s some Rumbas I really like and sound pretty flamenco to me,
If they are a true flamenco palo that´s another discussion, but all the flamenco greats play and sing Rumbas.

I totally agree. I'm sorry Ramzi that you take offence to this thread because its obviously in fun.
The opening video was laughably bad and I just took it a step further.

Yep...that's why we chose them !
The fact is though that in some ways Foroflamenco does not actually represent Flamenco in Spain because
we only talk about the top players, the best dancers, the cream of the singers and forget that these are just
the tip of the iceburg of rumba players, amateur dancers and drunken singers who make up a large part of normal
flamenco life in towns outside of say Seville and jerez etc..
That's not to say there isn't taste and talent out there....of course there is....but there is also a lot of bad noise out there too
just as we have in western Pop and rock music and bad garage bands.
Flamenco went through a period of awful bad taste, cheesy videos, horrible costumes and sexist attitudes that we can laugh at now.
Its not cynical, its just the way fashions and tastes have evolved over time

rombsix -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 18:20:58)

This is extremely boring and supremely easy to accomplish. Just 3 minutes on the guitar, and you will get it sounding 100% like this. Yes?

All I'm saying is don't use just one aspect of what rumba can be to bring down the entire genre.

Is it a coincidence that Entre dos Aguas is Paco de Lucia's most famous material and probably the only one that he did in every single performance of his?

Go here and try to learn: https://www.youtube.com/user/lecatalan13/videos

Then come back and let me know...

Dudnote -> RE: How can anyone not like rumba? (May 16 2016 18:53:24)

I enjoyed that one Ramzi. Made me smile with his good vibes.

To divert the discussion a bit, when you get really into a rumba do you still manage to keep all your gulpe's on the golpedore? My rumbas leave my sound board looking like Swiss cheese. [&:]
