Dudnote -> The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 17:32:06)

Has anybody considerred putting together a foro map? I'm staying in Nantes for 2 weeks and I've no idea where the nearest foro members are. Would be cool to meet up and jam. A foro map could help travelling foro members get in touch and that would enrich their flamenco journeys immensely. I've not looked a the technical side of implimenting such a thing, but I'm sure we're not talking rocket science. Perhaps some members here have some ideas about how it could be done without impinging excessively on practice time. Obviously if a member didn't want to be mapped then that's fine, but I'm guessing a lot of members would be happy to jam with more flamencos than they currently do.

Dudnote -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 17:45:25)

I just found this thread...
http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=137972&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=map&tmode=&smode=&s=#138005
So there was a map, but unless I'm going blind it's no longer available.

Anyway, there are 2 obvious problems with that map
1) users couldn't opt out
2) it was IP based and so not accurate and only showed logged in users.

So how about a system where users stick a pin on their home town with a link to their email address?

Escribano -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 17:48:55)

Good idea.

I have created a custom map in Google Maps that you should be able to edit. Search for your location, add to map then edit the pin to be your login name and anything else you want to share. Try it out.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zRDPlswTBu0Q.kjfLB0j3GxDE

Please be responsible with personal data (it is a public page) - do not precisely locate your address. Mine is not as shown. We can all edit it, so please don't change anyone else's entry or other information.

If it gets enough data, I will share it at the top of the forum page.

Dudnote -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 18:50:54)

Wow, fast response!! And that's cool!!!

How are the read / write privileges? Could non-members find this from surfing the web? Could they modify it?

Another issue would be how to stop some idiot vandalising it or how to recover data if someone accidentally deleted or moved a point. One option would be version control on the GIS vector file - there are things like the GIT version control program, but that's probably going way too far. A monthly back up on a USB stick could be enough (although someone actually has to do that so not great either) - or better, an automated regular backup to a server.

I don't have any strong opinion on whether or not this should be member only viewing.

Escribano -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 18:59:55)

It's a free public service from Google. I own it but anyone can find it, edit it or trash it if they come across the link on this site. We cannot limit write access by forum membership. Each edit is backed up to Google Drive and Google can restore it with a request from me, but I don't how far back that will go. There is also no version control that I can see for saving and restoring.

We take it as it is or we leave it. I don't have time to implement a more sophisticated solution. I could create a map from (inaccurate) IP addresses but that would breach privacy rules and would not be an opt-in solution.

Dudnote -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 19:17:01)

Well I guess we can live without version control.

I think this map is cool and will do the job very nicely. I'm impressed how quickly you did this too. Thumbs up to the map and a big Olleee Escribano!!!

Aretium -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 21:57:24)

This is a great idea, you guys have hit the jackpot, all over the coast! Im in Manchester, UK. Would love a jam but it would more like lessons hehe.

Leñador -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 22:18:23)

Super nifty, I'd love if a big chunk of members participated.

You don't, just "add pin" and edit the info of it.
Took me a while to figure lol

Dudnote -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 13 2015 23:36:20)

Hey Aretium, Manchester is where I first discoverred flamenco. I was getting leasons with Nick Wilkinson at the Institut Cervantes - I'd completely recommend you try finding Nick if you're seeking lessons, his web site is called 123flamenco. I also did a little accompaniement at Brenda's dance class a5 Cervantes too. Good times! No idea if they're still teaching, it was all over 10 years ago now.

Can you make this thread accessible to members only? Then it would be unlikely that non-members could get the link.

I do not like using any of Google's stuff because I find them to be annoying and not intuitive, I ended up having to sign-in before I can add my pin.

Oh really??? Maybe I'm wrong then Shroomy, maybe I was automatically signed in from earlier in the day...

Nice Map Escribano!

It doesn't give me the option to Add Pin. I can only search the location. Where did you see this option?

Add Marker rather than Add Pin. It's in the list of tools under the box to put in an address. Zoom to your location and then push that button.

rombsix -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 2:24:12)

Ay Buana Buana, King Kong! [:D][8D] Olé!

por medio -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 4:36:29)

The map's cool. Thanks heaps.

chester -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 4:45:13)

Awesome Escribano - thanks!

Nice idea Dudnote!

Good point. I've moved it to off-topic for now, until I can figure out how to protect it from non-members at the top of the page.

Hi Dudnote
Brenda passed away last year. Nick Wilkinson is still around I believe.

eitanfar -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 11:45:57)

Very cool !

B.T.W, Shroomy is right, you have to be logged in if you want to add a marker.

It's surprising that only one member (so far) is from Spain ... I would have expected many more given that this is a Flamenco forum.

Thanks Escribano !

Dudnote -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 16:45:00)

This is sad news. Brenda's classes were fun, full of dry north country banter between her and her husband Daaaave on the guitar. Then, once the class was over the banter would normally continue in the bar next door. It was fantastic how they'd take on guitarists who hadn't been playing so long and let them just slot in. If you see Dave do pass on my best regards.

David (a.k.a Dudnote)

I obliged, thank you Simon.
I had to list my bicoastal locations, where I "practice" respectively law and guitar!

Sr. Martins -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 18:11:56)

The map clearly shows that there must be an official forum for people living in spain. They've succeeded at keeping us out. [:D]

Andy Culpepper -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 19:42:44)

Very cool idea. I'm on there now, someone come visit me! [:)]

Dudnote, I love Guadeloupe. I went there when I was 17 and wanted to live there (of course). I remember amazing mangoes, lots of French pop music, and cows wandering into the streets [:D]

El Kiko -> RE: The foro map (Jan. 14 2015 21:03:27)

there are a lot of 'foros' in spanish language ...in spain

Thanks Andy, yeah it's a cool island and I'd love to come see your work shop!

Hey, my guitar has slightly too much relief and would love a visit from a flying luthier. I'm tempted to say I'd buy a guitar from the first luthier that could get over here and straighten it out [:D]

The musical calander here is a little sleepy at times, but there are a few festivals http://www.terredeblues.com/ in May and http://bananierbleu.fr/12316/ilojazz-edition-2014/ in December.
