EDIT For some reason Juan's original post is gone so here's the 2003 performance we were discussing.

I'd be interested to hear a more detailed opinion from an expert like you Juan, what do prefer now in terms of sound/expression and what do you notice in technique?

He was of course already very good when he won the Bordón Minero in the 2003 video you posted, seems his fingers were straighter in picado and now it seems he's playing with more bent fingers?

Here's a 2014 video not much picado but still can notice a more compact and economic right hand generally and picado with more bent fingers?

And 2012 for comparison.

He was an awesome player back then Orson but he took it to another level now. His fingers were straight in the video I posted. I sensed that he was a bit uncomfortable with that RH position. I thought he was not getting enough power on those picado runs but still an incredibly clean player. I'm just nitpicking I guess. Like you say, now he is playing with slightly curved fingers and is getting much better results in terms of sound, articulation and power, in my opinion. I'm not sure if I would call myself an expert but that is just what I think. By the way all of those videos are great

@Shroomy: I hope we can shake hands one day.[:D]

Maybe Antonio had just prepared harder and was on better form that day ?

Grisha -> RE: Antonio Rey (May 23 2014 22:46:28)

I recently had a conversation with Antonio online. I sent him one of my picado exercises and he asked if I wanted his opinion on it. Then he said that my picado in weak and he doesn't like it. He then told me the problem was my straight finger position. He said he had the same issue in the past, but now he learned from Paco (he said Paco showed him his technique) and he is now faster, cleaner and more powerful. He offered to show this to me, but at the time I had to go teach and asked to postpone the lesson. It never happened. In the past I tried to switch to a different position in picado, but always failed. I think my brain is just not flexible enough. I just got the audio file from my Tokyo concert, and my picado is weak, uneven and slow in comparison. Maybe I should go study with Antonio...

Hey Grisha, it's not enough that you are better than us, you have to be more humble too ?????

Oh, come on! :) I am just being realistic here. Honest.

On the other hand, in the straight finger camp we have Sabicas, Paco Cepero, El Tuto and, even more scary, Javier Conde. I have a video of his entire concert in Japan and he was MONSTROUS.

guitarbuddha -> RE: Antonio Rey (May 23 2014 23:09:47)

I'm trying to learn gypsy jazz and I guess jazz in general. And I just spend the last two years trying to find a RH fingering system to solve all of the string crossing problems that trying to play all the fast lines I wanted presented.......

And now I realise that all that time was wasted as I should have been learning more tunes.

You need a stronger picado like I need to type faster.

Leñador -> RE: Antonio Rey (May 23 2014 23:53:58)

I'm in the straight finger camp and it's all your fault Grisha! Lolol jk but when I first started learning flamenco I watched a lot of your videos to learn how I should hold my hand, when I got a teacher he tried to beat the straight fingers out of me but it was too late lolol

Perhaps when He was younger but based on all vids in THIS thread, there ain't nothing different with his technique at all. He is an monstrous player, and it all emanates, as I could tell coming from the stage, right from his corazon. I love his musicality and spirit and love of the guitar and music and flamenco. But he AINT PACO. look no further than his interpretation of Solea (gallo from duende album) and guajiras (if you are his facebook buddy). Man I feel the love shining through but it is not close. But guess what....
IT"S OK!!! it's totally cool that it's not the same playing or guy. And same goes for you too grisha and everybody else. Don't get all crazy everybody wondering in the mirror why we ain't paco....we just are ourselves. It's THAT simple really. You play fast and express and do what you need to do and struggle etc. Paco the same as us. But different.

At least you didn't name that Kema guy again! [:D]

Antonio himself has said that he's changed his picado technique in the past few years so certainly since the 2003 video posted at the start of this thread. I went to a recent workshop and he says he is constantly trying to improve and continues with disciplined metronome practice.
