Guys who started playing ten years ago and put down guys who were into it 40 years ago just don't know what it was like trying to learn in the 60's , 70's 80's. Even records were hard to come by, then if you slowed down a record, it would drop an octave. transcriptions-there were few, and compared to today's prices, expensive. One guy said he learned compas by smoking weed and taping speakers to his body while he blasted bulerias. He became a very good guitarist. Until Jason moved to the Bay Area in the 90's no one here could do fast picado. No one could really play modern style, much less explain it.
Really the only way to learn was to study with someone who knew, and they were far and few between, or simply go to Spain for as long as possible. I've written before when people started putting down Anita Sheer, unless you know people that are in their 50's and 60's who learned when they were young, you have no idea what it was like. As I wrote then, one day in the near future, people will watch videos recorded today by people some of you respect, and they will say how much they suck.
I'm not surprised at all that Pedro killed it, but I remain amazed that a guy with limited experience could deduce that he wasn't worthy to teach..........

I tried teaching myself flamenco in the early 80's and I can tell you there was very little to assist me in this endeavor. Pictures of players on album covers and a guitar were all that were available to me. Carlos Montoya was popular at one time so most of the flamenco albums I had were by him. I was able to develop a nice quintuplet tremolo and some rasgueados, but that was about it.

Coincidentally, I bought a bunch of flamenco books from the library last week, including a couple from that period:

http://www.amazon.com/Sabicas-Flamenco-Guitar-Transcription-Trotter/dp/B0047LNE74/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

http://www.amazon.com/Flamenco-Guitar-Solos-Mario-Escudero/dp/B0016CWZGS/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1390529739&sr=1-1&keywords=joseph+trotter+mario+escudero

Both from the late 70s. They appear to be reasonably accurate, and would certainly have been helpful from "non-ear" playing folks back 30 years ago.

I had a cassette of Escudero and it was recorded about a whole step faster than it was actually played. I thought it was meant to speed up the picados and it was mostly duets. Even then it didn't seem to be a legit recording to me. Also, a "staff notation only" transcription would not have been much help to me at the time.

I still have both those from when I bought them in the early 80's. Together with a few early PdL transcriptions by M' Hass, they represent most of what was available in terms of well known players transcriptions. If you wanted to figure out what guys like Nino Miguel, Cepero, Marote, etc were doing, you weren't getting it from a tab. Even if Gerardo's Encuentro dvd alone had been available back then, it would have changed a lot for a lot of guitarists.

I think the best transcriptions were being done in Japan in the eighties.

Like this one with Cepero and Serranito well represented. And pieces also by Paco Pena and Manolo Sanlucar.

And great value. I wish this stuff was more widely available in europe.

The current model seems to be loads and loads of paper with very little music.

After all of this I decided to just meet up with Juan Gomez(jg7238). And he may hook me up a lesson with either Pedro or a friend of his.

Were going to get together and exchange falsetas and share some things.

Awesome!
Also, I think Pedro is actually Tom Araya, so that's another plus.
