Sr. Martins -> Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 15:53:22)

Well, I got to ask this..

I often see pics and videos where the guitarist leaves the clip on tuner on the guitar while playing, it seems like its getting trendy but...

Why leave it there? Because it is marketed as being able to stay there while playing? Seriously, tell me why you do it, to me its like leaving a rag on the guitar because you're going to clean it after..

clevblue -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 16:00:06)

[:D] very good point. I only take mine off to put it on another guitar else my grandson gets it and throws it in the garden.

My biggest problem is, I've lost my ear, I find it hard to tune up without it now, it's made me lazy

koenie17 -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 16:02:57)

So you can quickly tune up while playing.. Also when there´s a lot of noise around. I Always leave it on! Doesn´t have anything to do with being trendy.

ralexander -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 16:19:27)

Might be trendy for some I guess, but it's just a tool - much easier to leave it on IMO - I think most people that use them probably just leave them on.

I can imagine the following reasons:

- You installed new strings which might still be stretching out.
- You switch to alternate tunings or even just drop-D tuning.
- You capo at different points and need to fine-tune to compensate for the pressure of the capo.
- Your pants have no pockets or are already too tight. [:D]

Munin -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 18:01:07)

Trust me, when you're playing on a noisy stage, the audience looks at you in expectation and your fellow players on stage want to rush into the next piece, and you have tuning issues, you'll be freaking happy to have that thing on your guitar.

Ricardo -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 18:29:34)

I clamps, first of all, to be more accurate by picking up vibration through wood, especially good in noisy environments. It stays on for those that use it because it is time consuming to clamp it on in addition to the time it takes to fine tune and adjust cejilla etc. It's just convenient, nothing more.

Ricardo

hmmm, you sure this isn't a fashion issue?

Could be a good Photoshop thread. :)

Its not a question of trend just common sense and practicality

its more effort to keep putting it on, taking it off... every-time u need tuning than it is to leave it

once you move it theres a higher possibility of misplacing it or leaving it behind...

but most important... stage lighting and temperature changes can affect your tuning...so if u need to use it fast that's exactly when you need it, when you are doing a gig and need to be fast, efficient and in tune...it would be silly to have it and leave it in your case offstage when you might need it the most...not before or after

Sr. Martins -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 19:31:52)

Hmm.. Ive always used it like any other tuner. Clip on, tune, clip off.

The "onstage theory" doesnt apply to all the home videos Ive seen so I guess that people usually have them on all the time.

If they were made of wood I would consider it as an extension of the guitar but I never even thought of leaving it on because that plastic technological device takes away my mojo [:D]

well you always need to tune...if you take it off its easier to misplace or forget it home when you need to go to flamenco classes or practice from my perspective anyway u look at it its more practical and easier to just leave it..

Sr. Martins -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 19:53:29)

True flamencos take classes at home with their father.

Florian -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 20:03:41)

lol

when i say flamenco classes i meant i go and play for dance classes...besides my father plays rock...and besides that, i never meet him [;)]

Sr. Martins -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 20:17:38)

True classes play rocks at flamencos.. oh, wait..

I got carried away [:D]

No practical reason, fashion accessory only......

I knew it. You've got a big one [sm=kiss.gif]

The other thing is that I never clip it where everyone does... usually it stays at the heel if the strings are new but most of the time I just clip it to a machine head peg [8D]

rombsix -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 22:32:33)

I don't keep it on for two reasons:

1- The case doesn't close with the tuner on
2- It ruins the finish (theoretically) if you keep it on forever

Sr. Martins -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 29 2012 23:17:22)

You use a case?

Oh.. I forgot you got a real guitar now [:D]

I am rubber, you are glue.

Sr. Martins -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 30 2012 1:46:06)

Hey, whats that for?

I think its great to have a real guitar and Iam never ashamed to say that I still play on a cheap yellow piece of wood with strings.

Maybe there was a misunderstanding.

There was. It is primarily on your side, not having gotten my "The Secret of Monkey Island" reference. [8D]

Curiously, which tuner do people most recommend?

Korg has a very good clip on tuner.

I use these little flaps on the sides of my head. Work just fine.

srshea -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 30 2012 18:34:54)

Clip-ons are great. I dropped mine the day after I bought it, which jimmied the spring mechanism a bit and makes it buzz a little, so I can’t keep it on.

But I wouldn’t want to because those things look totally stupid. It’d probably be more convenient and comfortable to wear pajamas and bathroom slippers on stage, but you’d look like a complete tool if you did that. You gotta put on a pair of stiff, shiny black shoes and crisp slacks that ride up and bind in the crotch. It’s just part of the deal.

Same with the tuners. Takes all of two seconds to grab one of those things and clip it on. You can put it back under your chair or reach around and discretely clip it on to the back of your frilly-collared shirt. Sometimes you have to suffer for your art.

(sez the guy who’s performed in public a grand total of three times [8D])

I like the red snark tuner, but you still have to fine tune by ear after that...

ralexander -> RE: Clip on tuners.. Why?? (Aug. 31 2012 11:26:33)

The red Snark is good, and cheap. I've also dropped mine 3-4 times on hardwood and it still works fine. It can be tough to see outdoors if that's a concern for anyone.

Smartazz. Weren't you the one who wrote that clip on tuners were "especially good in noisy environments"?

Oh, SNAP!!![:D]
