I guess that what u mean about west is the west of US?
Anyway, I understand what u're sayin

no when i say west i meant anywhere outside spain not the US exclusively and in particular...,it happens in Australia too...it happens everywhere... it even happens in spain...there's obviously people that know their flamenco in all those countries but i was referring to the general public who don't know any better....usually the ones that call anything on nylon string guitar flamenco, weather its brazilian., mariachi, classical...anything

the same group of naive yuppies who think being a gypsy would be something romantic

quote:

man, it's so difficult for me to distinguish between pure flamenco, bulerías, sevillanas, siguiriyas , fandango, flamenco-influenced pop music, and all those flamenco-related music .

flamenco is complex.

i understand it takes a long time to learn the forms, and it is confusing...i suggest picking one at the time and listening to as many examples as you can of it ...discover what makes them .....but that's what this forum is all about...don't be embarrassed or scared to ask as many questions as you like you will always find a sympathetic ear who remembers how confusing it was and the the only way one learns is by asking...

once u start to recognize the forms for yourself and appreciate them and appreciate the hard work and years and years dedication it takes to do flamenco and hard work and attention to detail to achieve a certain level of authenticity which i think is something very important to all of us you will understand why our reaction to this guy

quote:

flo thats no good, i woulda thought you would be able to keep the hot ones coming back for more shouldn't you?

lol well its not like i am not trying...i am throwing myself on the floor and locking my arms around their feet as they try to live..i am telling them how amazing they dancing after just 30 minutes of lessons and how close they are...nothing works [&:]...but luckily as the last hot one walks out the new hot one walks in for her 2 weeks...so i quickly forget [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]....for another 2 weeks

normally i don't care about who does what...but this guy is just pathetic, smells of desperation to be a sex symbol, its Fabio on guitar lol.

I dunno man, it's hard to knock Fabio. I saw him at a Chinese restaurant in LA a few years back, he was about 50 at the time according to Wikipedia, and he was sitting and flirting with this gooooorgeous girl who had to have been about 20. I wouldn't mind trading places with him for a day or three! [;)]

Florian -> RE: give me ur thoughts about this video (Nov. 24 2011 15:23:34)

u good looking enough all u need is an Italian accent, long hair and a few days at the gym [;)]....

i honestly think she was flirting more with his fame, she must have known who he was ......if it wasn't " Fabio" it would have been some sleazy old guy with long hair, over the top Italian accent and saggy muscles that have maybe a couple of good years left in them.....fame and money is the no 1 aphrodisiac ...u should have "accidentally" drooped some coins on the floor to to get her attention

but then again i dont know the guy [:)] i am kidding...

can u give ur opinion on these artist?(I'm trying to learn what's the good stuff):

1-Lole y Manuel - Good stuff! Not always very traditional but experimented in a respectful and interesting way.
2- Chambao - I like them in sufficiently small doses but they're not flamenco, they're Spanish pop/chill with flamenco influences. Spanish group so actually does understand flamenco - i.e., knows what they're departing from.
3-Ojos De Brujo - See Chambao.
4-Tomatito - THE MAN. Easily one of the top few flamenco guitarists in the world.
5-Martirio - Authentic, I think? Don't know him well.
6-Nina Pastori - Recordings tend to be very poppy but flamenco-inspired. She is a bona fide flamenco singer, and a good one.
7-Estrella Morente - One of the better female flamenco singers out there.
8-Jim Stubblefield - Who?
9-Armik - Not only cheesy crap, but cheesy crap that sounds the exact same on every album. I'm ashamed that there was a period in high school where I enjoyed putting this cheesy crap on in the background while doing work. Also is a douche - ask Kate or Jason. Not remotely close to flamenco, except that it involves a guitar.
10-Gipsy Kings - Understand flamenco better than most of the popular fakemencos, but they tend not to record flamenco. Every now and then they'll record a bulería or a fandango or something and really confuse everybody. Supposedly the individual guys in the band can really rock the flamenco when they want to.
11-Johannes Linstead - See Armik.
12-Jesse Cook - Cheesy, but the guy does have a good sense for composition and melody, which is more than can be said for hacks like Armik. Some of his albums are definitely enjoyable but by the time he released that live album I found his whole schtick kind of tired. Not flamenco by any stretch, however.

Well, when I came to the US I never thought that this could happen. Im curious how much I might differ from the image you got about me from the foro! haha

I´ll send you a pm!!

vuduchyld -> RE: give me ur thoughts about this video (Nov. 25 2011 3:36:15)

Regarding the Gipsy Kings...

I was in Istanbul last year with my wife. She is a flamenco dancer and scholar and she was doing some research for her second book on flamenco dance. While in Istanbul, we hung out with one of the Gipsy Kings...a guy named Kivanch Oner. GREAT guy...totally unassuming. Kivanch put us in touch with some local flamencos so that my wife could do some research on flamenco in the diaspora. I can assure you that Kivanch is well-steeped in flamenco tradition! His local homeboys were really serious about flamenco. If anybody has spent time in Istanbul, you might have met Alper Kargin (great guitarist), Ata Erdogrul (guitar/cante), Manuel Reina (dancer, originally from Spain).

GK aren't my personal favorite, but they can be fun for a listen and Kivanch is really a great, great guy and has amazing knowledge of flamenco.

Seriously, that was the worst thing I've ever seen. How does the guy wake up and look at himself in the mirror (I'm sure he is a narcissist) and be ok with what he does?

Second, how desperate are the musicians that play with him? I hope they get paid a **** load of money!!

Un saludo, Errol

Why so funny, Ricardo? I don't understand.

I hope I'm not getting my poor wife in trouble if I said anything stupid. She doesn't deserve the hassle.

hahahaha obviously not. Martirio is a woman for a start :) She is the mother of Raúl Rodríguez from Son de la Frontera and has been around since the 70's when she worked alongside people such as Kiko Veneno, Pata Negra and Rafael Amador. She then went solo always wearing dark glasses and a flamenco costume singing about being a housewife, getting tatoos, being gay, very modern lyrics and outlook. Her music mixes copla Andaluz, flamenco, bolero, jazz, tango and rock.

She sang on the CD " De Granada a la Luna" the Lorca homage directed by Enrique Morente, which Harold mixed and mastered.

to my knowledge there's no one named Kivanch Oner in the Gipsy Kings, they live in france (spanish background) and everyone from the group is from 2 related families the Reyes and the Baliardos

Her name ends in an o. Totally unfair. Like I said, not familiar with her/him/it/thon at all [:D]

There is one diference betweem Ojos de Brujo and Chambao:
CHAMBAO is dooing very fresh fusion and really nice music, there is much more flamenco influence that u thing.

Ojos de brujo are musically very poor and the voice of that girl ofends me, really. They are famous becouse they have sort of revolutionary style and lyrics, also uses "cool" electronic effects [:'(].. The group is focused to youngsters here in spain

Is it possible he might have played on tour with them or something? My Turkish is, well, pretty non-existent and my Spanish could be better, so something might have been lost in translation...but I'm reasonably certain there was a connection. Seems to happen all the time that bands get subs when they go out on tour.

vuduchyld -> RE: give me ur thoughts about this video (Nov. 26 2011 16:12:13)

I just clicked on the link Rombsix added...so, I guess Ricardo and Kivanch are friends and recording partners?!

Small world!!! Wow!

Sorry for laughing...from my point of view the confusion is really funny and inside joke. He has been friends with them for years. Kivanch and I were roomates for like 4 years, we met at PDL concert. He has organized several concerts for their sons who have their own group that does originals and covers of their parents standards. He has run into some trouble with marketing the group because world marketing won't allow him or them to relate what they do to the ACTUAL gipsy Kings. (I know it is funny how retarded that is). Last year I was at Kivanch's wedding in Istanbul with two members of the jr group and an other friend from the states and hung out with the same people you mention.

Kivanch was always into GK and we played together for years...all the time I tried to push him into a more flamenco direction but his heart was always just rumba. he taught me lots of turkish pop tunes that we performed together mixed with rumbas, and of course through him I have had several opportunities to play with the real GK's both informally in after parties and also once at a cancer benefit on stage. So anyway your story just struck me kind of funny, but thanks for sharing!

Ricardo

Wow...amazingly small world! That's cool that you got to hang out with some of those same folks! I really enjoyed watching Ata and Alper play. They were GREAT guys, too! Spent a lot of time with my wife and me, as did Manuel. We must have just missed each other because we were there last year, too!

Ok....Now that makes sense.
I couldnt understand how you knew so many pieces of turkish music. I just thought you were some kind of musical kleptomaniac!!

I agree that they are not flamenco...but I'm sorry, they are (were) an AMAZING band live. Great percussion, and a cool live mix of flamenco musicians, jazz musicans and DJ...much better live than chambao in my opinion.

oh man i love em ...they are more like club music, party music...not sitting down appreciating the art music, there's all kinds of music for all kinds of moods and times... they are very good at what they do
