I wonder where he initially found the budget to put on such shows?

I think it's clever the way he surrounds himself with musicians of a higher level. His percussionists have very solid rhythm. They create a lot of energy in his shows providing a platform for him to do whatever he can musically. Then other good musicians fill up all the space and re enforce whatever he does.

It's mainly about his good looks and personality on stage. The music is tight enough. He reminds me of that Andre Rieu violin guy.

Those golpes on the guitar that the dancer responds to at the beginning are pretty lame though [:D]

haha ok

Not Flamenco, but still entertaining in its own way.

Flamenco is like a perspective...either you have it or you don't

like a perspective? hmm.. care to explain?

By the way I heard that Agujetas is married to a pretty cute japanese woman now days.

Actually the cutaway guitar that he uses at the beginning is a Pedro Maldonado (Malaga) (see 00:50 (headstock)).
That's a luthier that I like a lot

Well, since this thread has no point we can go off topic..

I have a serious question to you coz u r in Toronto right now! Do you think its a good idea to go to Toronto during Christmas? Or is it just freaking cold and there is nothing to see and do? A friend of mine is going..and since I still have no idea what to do during Christmas/new year.. I might join. But I hope there is a wonder and I meet some nice people to celebrate these free days with....In the Us.. If I leave the US now I could get problems reentering the states... So..maybe not Toronto..

Toronto is great at XMas! It's much more milder that many of the other cities in Ontario and there are always museums, concerts and everything else to do. I'd say Toronto has a pretty good Xmas vibe.(depending on where you are!!)

I don't know what is real flamenco, I don't know what are sevillanas, bulerías, alegrías and all...
I hated flamenco but I started to appreciate it, just help me here. May I ask, Why u don't like the music in this video?

Oh hey sorry, no hard feelings! The video is very commercial and kind of a stereotypical facsimile of what people can think flamenco is. Talking about what flamenco is or isn't can get a little tense. I say, if you enjoy it then cool. [;)]

Did not mean to troll. Sorry!

Here is one of Grisha playing Panaderos.(I'd post something with dance and cante but nothing comes to mind right now)

Grisha's playing on this one always impressed me.

I think because this is quite a classical piece, and I might be wrong, but, I think Grisha is a classical guitarist besides flamenco. You can really see that in this piece on his pulgar, it's more in the hand while playing arpeggios(more picado's with bass notes), instead of streched out. I like Grisha's playing too

I get what u mean. I guess it's just a show like some mentioned, stereotypical like u say. Like comparing Green Day with August Burns Red ( ABR is the real thing).

thanks for Grisha video, really amazing. I can see part of La Virgen de Guadalupe on the background of the video xD .

can u give ur opinion on these artist?(I'm trying to learn what's the good stuff):

1-Lole y Manuel
2- Chambao
3-Ojos De Brujo

5-Martirio
6-Nina Pastori
7-Estrella Morente
8-Jim Stubblefield
9-Armik

This video offends me.

To answer the question, no this is not flamenco.

Telling real flamenco apart from cheap knockoffs isn't easy for a beginner but one thing is ALWAYS true: If you see the guitar player wearing a cape, it is not flamenco.

hahaha I'll keep that in mind! [:D]

Munin -> RE: give me ur thoughts about this video (Nov. 23 2011 16:31:56)

Chambao, Ojos de Brujo and Nina Pastori are flamenco musicians doing flamenco-influenced pop music so they are usually a good and tasteful entry point for people new to flamenco.

normally i don't care about who does what...but this guy is just pathetic, smells of desperation to be a sex symbol, its Fabio on guitar lol...if the clothes and hair were just for the videoclip i would have understood but i have seen him looking like that before.....every bul**hit ignorance and stereotypical clique people in the west have about flamenco hes put in...sad thing is...i am sure hes been around long enough to see real flamenco...its not as if he dosent know....not as if youtube dosent exist in his part of the world....u would have to hear and see some real flamenco to try and water it down and rob it of everything that means something..

hes like the 40 something ,white, housewife, soccer moms sex symbol

lol what the f*uk was the tapping ? lol

the music, malaguena part is entertaining enough...because of everyone else...hes just playing the same licks to death which as KMMI77 said sound good cause of what they doing...

other then that it was great

I don't know about culture other than PR and a little of Orlando xD
I guess that what u mean about west is the west of US?
Anyway, I understand what u're sayin'.

man, it's so difficult for me to distinguish between pure flamenco, bulerías, sevillanas, siguiriyas , fandango, flamenco-influenced pop music, and all those flamenco-related music .

flamenco is complex.

Looks like it was filmed in one of the Alhambra buildings though.

The backdrop is the Plaza de Toros at Ronda, the oldest in Spain, where Pedro Romero made his debut. It still belongs to the Real Maestranza de Caballeria de Ronda. I will point out this video to them. I'm sure the Ronda aristocrats will take appropriate action.

How long has it been since someone was burned at the stake in Spain?[:D]

Now I have to look into ABR. Right now I'm listening to She Wants Revenge(NOT flamenco ;)

Do not know all the names off of your list but Tomatito is a favorite of mine. Have been meaning to get Cook's latest album(supposed to be very good). Gypsy Kings are
very good rumba but not very flamenco but are at times flamenco-esque.
Hang out here long enough and you will see some very good examples of flamenco.

For myself, some time ago, I realized that there is no flamenco if it does not have compas. It's sort of the central element upon which flamenco singing/dance/guitar is based.

Lately I have been listening to the Paco Pena 'flamenco' album.

E_7 -> RE: give me ur thoughts about this video (Nov. 23 2011 18:12:06)

ok so in conclusion, Benise aka Fabio xD is an insult to the andalusian flamenco...

oh ok, cool and thanks for the reply.
I guess there are different compás in flamenco.
How can u tell the compas in a flamenco song? the beats?
oh and try and listen to some artists of the list I wrote and tell me what u think (whenever u can)
August Burns Red(ABR) are really good btw [:D]

Lole y Manuel...hmm I have see this man before in something.
Here we are:

What a cool video.

Jeez, you know, going through your list there seems to be some interesting artists there. But what it comes down to is I think that flamenco is a very sophisticated form from which much can be taken away and applied elsewhere. Take for instance the wealth that is flamenco guitar technique. The techniques themselves are not necessarily flamenco and could be applied to any style of music and would most certainly enrich it. But that's just one example.
Arguing what is 'real' flamenco and what is not can be unfair. I personally would prefer to think in terms of what is honest vs commercial.
