ou know what? , I think you are missing the point. Solea is the mother of flamenco, and I think It must be played to give flamenco the right it deserves.

I dont think he is , i think hes very smart to cater his music to his audience and occasions and type of work he does, a solea would have gone really good there :-))...i am not gonna go to a wedding at the Hilton and bring my singer and have him sing Seguiriyas....or to a latin party outdoors where everybody is standing has been dancing, drinking.. wants to dance and play a solea or open with it..

same way as i am not going to go to a flamenco festival and open with this...nothing wrong with letting the ocassion or mood dictate the music or order..

even within flamenco we try to change mood and change palos around to suit certan gigs

belive me there's been some gigs where i wished i do some rumbas...

omarhamdan89 -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 17:25:30)

Yeah thats True Florian,
& i respect your point view Dudo :)

but some times its my job to play in some place!!! "JOB"
& they give me money to make the music, so coz its my work i play what they want,
but when am alone or with friends or in a flamenco concert i can play Solea or sth like that,
& btw i love latin music so much!!! it is so hyper & i can feel it so much,
like cha cha & salsa ,,, so i am influenced by them,

how ever i play the Arabic Lute its called here "Oud" , it is so soft & so spiritual & so emotional , so it can satisfy me as well,
i have different moods :)

the Bulerias video :)
Tell me what do you think , but the video device is not very good.

rombsix -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 19:12:36)

To the untrained ear, this is bulerias. To the "trained" one, it's not.

I hope Kudo is feeling very generous...

Omar: The MOST important thing about flamenco is COMPAS. You clearly do NOT understand the compas of buleria. We haven't heard you play other palos, and buleria being one of the more "difficult" ones, I am not going to generalize to flamenco altogether. However, when it comes to buleria, you need to slow WAY down, and learn the compas and the compas cycles from scratch. You need to start with WAY easier falsetas, not Paco de Lucia's material.

Your technique also needs work, but that is NOT the core of the problem. This might SOUND like flamenco, but it's NOT. It needs a good deal of work to get up to par...

Do NOT despair though - we all start out somewhere. It's a shame though that you've been playing for 8 years now, and you're still at this level. You need to find yourself a good teacher, or a good set of DVDs, and get back to the basics. Set the metronome at 120 or 140, and learn buleria at THAT tempo. Better yet, keep buleria aside for a bit, and start out with easier stuff, compas wise, like maybe solea, or tango, or the likes...

If you have the right mindset, you'll be able to unlearn what you've learned incorrectly, and get things going. It's going to need a lot of patience though because you haven't been playing for only a few months...

Cheers! [;)]

=============

Technique: 6 / 10
Aire: 6 / 10
Compas: 4 / 10

Final score: 16 / 30 = 5.34 / 10

kudo -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 19:20:02)

my opinion: Compas is shaky, and tempo fluctuating, at least something doesn't sound right to me. its short on fasletas, it only has 2 falsetas.
out of generosity (the real score is lower)
I would give it 5.5/10

so how did you learn flamenco? and for how long have you been playing flamenco?
by the way, who is the maker of your guitar? where did you get it from?

to be honest, right now after seeing this video, I dont think I should give you the TABS because you really need to learn REAL flamenco first!!
however, because I appreciate your effort and appreciate the fact that you took the challenge and because I want you to learn real flamenco and get your ear used to hearing it, I will buy you Ricardos CD , MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO HIS BULERIAS AND LEARN THE COMPAS!! I think for you own good, this is the best I can offer.

what do you guys think?

kudo -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 19:35:46)

lol forget about the TABS, the CD is enough, and Im being generous here. its also for his own good [;)]

I beg to differ mate... I suggest you buy Omar just the tab of Ricardo's rumba. That's what he was looking for in the first place. I think he would prefer it to Ricardo's whole CD because he would NOT end up being able to learn the rumba from just the audio from the CD (if he can't transcribe it from the VIDEO, then surely he can't from the CD). If you think buying him the CD is going to make him a superb flamenco guitarist in a couple of months, it's NOT - considering that he already clearly listens to PdL and Vicente Amigo, etc., who we all know are THE REAL DEAL when it comes to flamenco.

I say, just buy him the tab of Ricardo's rumba. And if you're feeling REALLY generous, buy me the MP3 tracks of Ricardo's CD.

Cheers!

kudo -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 19:45:44)

omar to help you out in learning the basics of Bulerias:

I video taped a private lesson I had with Tino Van der Sman, a famous guitarist who trained under Gerardo Nunez and came all the way from Seville for a concert here:

Mark2 -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 9 2011 22:17:30)

I got hired to play at a wedding with a quartet and the agent told me the bride wanted to hear a particular tune as they entered the reception. I said send me the mp3 and we would see if we could play it. It turned out to be that same ottmar tune. The idea of playing it was repulsive to me, so I sent back a message saying i'm not sure we could play it. The agent responded that they needed to know right away because if we couldn't, they pick something else. Given the taste of the bride, I imagined they'd come up with something equally hideous, so I said we'd do it. After all, it was their wedding, not a concert, and we were being paid a lot of money.

I went on you tube and learned the tune in about 2 minutes, then taught it to the other guys during the sound check. While we were waiting for the doors to open, we were on stage in a very luxurious ballroom. There were a couple of couches in the front of the room, in case I suppose a few guests wanted to relax during the reception.

The percussionist remarked that perhaps instead of launching into ottmar's masterpiece, we should go lay on the couches and pretend to be asleep snoring as the guests entered. I pictured the three stooges in my mind. The thought of it was so hilarious that I managed to play the tune without barfing up the excellent meal they fed us before the gig. In fact, I think we stretched it out for several minutes. Far be it from me to deny a bride joy on her wedding day.

on a more serious note, i was active playing gigs when Ottmar released that tune -his first and biggest hit. I remember reading in a trade journal that that tune was played for a room full of radio programmers and when it was over, they all applauded.

And finally, around that time, I played with the great man himself at a gig, and was surprised on many levels. First, his picado was pretty decent, and his skill as a soloist wasn't bad either. Unfortunately for him, there was a flamenco show in the club that night and after playing a few of his tunes, a couple of the girls jumped up and started doing palmas por bulerias.
Let's just say the the op did a better job in his vid and leave it at that.

quote:

exactly, i think you did the right thing...sometimes you have to do what you have to do

omarhamdan89 -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 10 2011 1:49:22)

People love & they being attracted from SIMPLE things!
& u know in composing "The Difficulty in simplicity" you have to be simple to the people's ear!
simple not mean that you dummy or with bad skills!!

you are making music to people not to the guitarists!
consider that your music ppl gona hear it not just the Guitarists!

so its very nice & very hard to make a simple nice music :)
if you ask ppl abt their favorite music or fav tune they well tell you a simple music :)

El Kiko -> RE: ricardo marlow - cafe sole Tab (Apr. 10 2011 2:19:30)

interesting story ..I have many similar ...but the main reason i eventually left the commercial music "scene" was the playing for money thing............and I did play in a lot of studios and concerts with very , very, well known artists....sometimes too much...however....
it's a musical prostitute..........you play what I say ......I give you money ..........
hmmm.........

so i made another band ...and played in bars for free..........went really good .....and we can play anywhere ..cos its free....(or a few beers, petrol...whatever......)

so now I went back to being a technician.and play what I want to ....free.....!!
its great ....so I miss a bit of compass here and there ...........I am alone here now ....but I can do what I want cos ....it's free !!

you haven't answered my question, who is your teacher? whats his name? does he have any albums, any recordings? because anyone can claim that they have studied with famous guitarist in spain, and theres no proof.

I believe that good guitar teachers have atleast one album published, or at the very least, they must have some kind of video recording of a concert or something. if they dont have that, then run away from them.

by the way, theres something I dont understand, how can you not have the money to buy $10 TAB but can afford guitar lessons? I have never seen a guitar lesson under $10. if theres lessons under $10, then something is suspicious about the "teacher"
you know, I find it very hard to believe that theres actually a flamenco teacher in Jordan, and also hard to believe that theres flamenco music there. why? because I know what Jordan is like, I have been there and I know exactly how things work in the field of arts and music.
