I have K&K pickups in both my steel-strings (which sound fantastic) and in my classical. Most venues I play, the sound through the amp is never louder than the sound coming through the guitar and honestly the sound is GREAT.

Check them out: http://www.kksound.com/pureclassic.html

I use the transducers, never the under-saddle stick type pickup as every one ive ever tried sounds nasty.
A lot of places I play, honestly the pickup is better than using mics... and far better than any fishman pickups or any other pickups ive ever tried.

Sure in a perfect world, sit a quality condenser there and you won't get a better sound, but the K&Ks are DEFINITELY worth a look at, either for blending with a mic to just boost the sound a bit, or entirely on their own...

I dont play too much steel string guitars as yourself but I would recommend DiMarzio acoustic guitar pickups or Seymour Duncan.
