rennaps -> Guitar option overload! (Aug. 24 2010 3:30:10)

Hi, new to the forum, wondering if the more knowledgable can give me some advice.

I'm wanting to upgrade from the good old Yamaha cg171 to my first professional level instrument and feeling overwhelmed with all the options. The problem is i'm in Australia and obviously can't play any of these before i buy.

There are a few models i'm looking at on ebay around the $2000 - $3500 mark that seem like good deals (Galan, Vasquez Rubio, Carrillo, G Weigert, Sigurdson, Rafael De Cordoba). Trilogy guitars are also selling an Eliasson negra for $3000 and there is a nice Brazilian rosewood Hippner at casa gitano for about $3000 i think. I'm getting more indecisive every day.

I would prefer to spend under $3000, but if spending a little more gets me a much better guitar i would rather invest a bit more as i plan on keeping the guitar for a long time.

If anyone could give me any advice i'd really appreciate it. If it helps, i've played a Maldanado Negra quite a few times and loved it. The sound and playability was perfect to me, but they're way out of my price range.
Thanks

Yes i've done all that and there isn't much info on some of the models available. I've never heard of Galan or G weigert.

As i asked in my initial post, i'm more after an opinion regarding the guitars currently available for sale. A comparison between them if you will, specifically the best bang for buck and if any of the guitars listed compare to a Maldanado f1 in sound and playability or the closest to it.

I'm aware people are very happy with some of these models, but if you had a choice, as i do, which would you choose and why.

I know a guy here in Brisbane who has a Brazillian rosewood Maldonado f1. Its a very nice guitar and i know he has offered to sell it a few times. Which city are you in? You may be able to tempt him with a reasonable offer as he now has a new lester de voe.

Hey thanks, i think that might be a friend of mine, which is the actual Maldonado guitar i'm talking about. If you don't mind could you send me a pm with the details just in case it's someone else.
Thanks

Before you go out and spend that much money make sure you watch these videos by Ruben Diaz on How to Choose a Good Flamenco Guitar. There are several videos

This was such an eye opener for me. Now I know what to look for when I finally can afford a quality guitar.

Oh no! Not MORE Andelusional guitars!

EDIT: Are we sure that the Professor is not some illegitimate child of Esteban?

Amigo Michael,

You're kidding, right?

I surely hope so. Can't think of a worse person to "recommend" what to look for in a flamenco guitar. "You will buy this guitar, you will play like Paco and I will show you the way"

It's true... I'm still an amateur. [X(] However I do think there is some value in his video such as his explanation of the high bridge, gap between the strings, intonation, etc. I will say that his guitar is ugly.

Here is "he who cannot be named" as a young child, seeing foroflamenco for the first time.

As he grew older and more arrogant he forgot this lesson and the legacy of his mistake is now enscribed on the walls of history.

In other words... he is a tosser. I would no more take advice from him than I would from North Vietnam on how to conduct an election.
