Juan Martin Article

Gitano -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jul. 28 2005 16:52:24)

Juan Martin - the biggest con in Flamenco!

flyeogh -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jul. 28 2005 18:11:32)

Gitano if you don't like the guy fair enough. You don't have to buy see or listen.

Con is an ugly word. Could you not offer something a little more constructive?

minordjango -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jul. 28 2005 23:52:44)

Juan MArtin,
Is a fine teacher his video set has been very useful,
Many flamenco players from the more Tradional school, mention thats hes not at the grade,
LEts just say he has helped many of us to play, and he has heaps to offer as a muso as well,
Well its back to sabicas for me , Which I could not handle unless I had gone through the Juans methods.

scarfaze -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 14 2008 6:50:57)

I dont really understand why all the fuss bout Juan Martin? I mean it was HIM who introduced me to Flamenco because it seems like all the other players out there are too proud to show their techinques to anybody! I bought Juan`s book and dvd and he really explains everystep and to me it seems that he truly has love for flamenco especially the compass! Now my fav players are PDL an VA, sabicas,montoya and all the greats! but I dont see the point why some people just hate Juan!

cathulu -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 14 2008 9:32:25)

Nor do I!

Juan makes a living at something that perhaps better guitarists cannot - maybe that is where the animosity lies. Life isn't fair so suck it up people! HTFU!

I know some people take exception to his press material, but it is all true as far as I can tell. He tours and needs to get bums in the seats so how can he be faulted for his press material?

Really I think Juan was at the right place at the right time - became popular because he was a pioneer in teaching flamenco. He is also accessible. I've said it before and will say it again - he is accessible like Ace Frehely of Kiss.

But Juan works hard at it, he was touring to Yellowknife for christsakes! So the man deserves his success.

koella -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 14 2008 9:48:02)

And another one.[&:]

I was always taught that history is repeating itself, but not at this pace.

cathulu -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 14 2008 9:59:08)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I agree, I didn't realize I was responding to a post originating from so long ago!!!

Georg -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 0:56:40)

There must have been at least five Juan Martin discussions after this one... [8|]

scarfaze -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 4:57:53)

I cant see why all the fuss

deyo -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 9:28:38)

Juan Martin is handsome.

[:D]

John O. -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 19:13:27)

I'd like to take this post into a whole new direction: why are the guitarists the most jealous divas in flamenco?

Whether it's among the big guys or two rivaling guitarists in the same small town, there's something about the guitar in general that makes players want to prove they're the best. I've been guilty too in the past, but I've gotten a lot better.

I heard when Tomatito came to Germany years ago to do a workshop, a lot of the teachers didn't attend, only because their students were also attending. That to me is just d@mn weird.

I took the advice of a guitarist I know and still try to live by it: don't pull yourself down getting caught up in who's got better technique, more creative, quicker learner, more famous, has a better understanding, is more 'flamenco' etc. because it's not gonna help YOU - nor will getting caught up in who's WORSE than you, not for real etc. Just keep your eyes forward, do your own thing, you'll have a lot less teeth gritting and be a lot more successful. PDL isn't a highly respected great player because Juan Martín's technique is worse. Of course looked at the other way around PDL set the standard for what good playing is nowadays, but on a scale most people shouldn't consider for themselves.

Just some thoughts...

Florian -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 20:15:12)

Its not just in flamenco and its defenetly just the guitarists, infact theyr jelosuy and competitivnes are relativly small compared to the dancers and singers.

I dont know why, its human nature I gues, we all wish we were bigger than that but we all fall into the same trap.

with working alot on anything comes a certain confidence, and self assurance, its not something anyone plans its just litlle unoticeble steps that take you there, next thing you know, you are competitive.

competition is the base of growth tho

its not good or bad, i dont have reasons or excuses, it just is.

if you not competitive its not cause its not in you, its either cause u havent had to, or arent in the enviorment where u need to, in the right enviroment and under the right circumstances anyone can and will be.

Its eazy to look and say ohh "Paul" is so competitive, but if u look at the big picture we realise that we are all just as bad, and mibe the only reason we can point it in out in him is because hes blunter about it.

SO the question is not why are we competitive and egotistical but why dont some know how to tone it down to a more acceptable level where it gives the impression like they not, just like the rest of us who are self involved and competitive [;)] that's a litlle eazyer to swallow ...

once you realize its just human nature and its normal, and if you have the courage admit that you too are gulty of it even if not in flamenco , even if in other areas its not so annoying or scarey, u can put it to work for you.

Paco is certainly competitive, otherwise he wouldnt play the best and have the best picado, the emotions are all the same , we just use different names for them, driven, ambitious, self assured, confident, proud etc.

I am certainly gulty of all of it [8|]

Happy birthday btw !!![:D]

John O. -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 16 2008 20:39:38)

Yeah that does happen in dance too, though I was on an intensive course at Christmas and a couple of the other students were also two well established dance teachers. I thought that was great - I like a teacher that recognises they still have stuff to learn. Nobody knows it all.

Why people are competitive is interesting. I can be incredibly competitive - certainly around dance. Less so in guitar because I've started learning so late and I'm more realistic about what I can achieve.

I used to be competitive at work, but not now. And while I couldn't care less about having the cleanest house or cooking the best meals, I do care about being a good mom and a good errr........ you know..... wife. [:D][:D]

Guess I'm competitive about things that are important to me.[:)]

...and he's not stupidly modest either!

In an old BMG Magazine from the 70's the interviewer asked him if he reckoned he was the best Flamenco guitarist in the World...

Paco said "Yes". [:D][:D]

Well...Why not?

The interviewer described him as "quietly direct"..[:D]

I like that. No BS.

cheers,

Ron

Stu -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 2:22:48)

No one was touching this thread for ages!! like some thread with a common strain of JM disease, no one wants to get infected.

But now its ok I suppose..... its cured

I don't think guitarist are the most jealous divas in flamenco.

I would think it has to be the dancers, no? then singers, then guitarists.

There always seems to be some underlying bitchyness/jealousy in any dance.
Dance is essentially about appearance and how you look when you dance. you cant appreciate dance unless you see it. (except maybe some tap or flamenco footwork.)

Ok so you get the moves right, fine. then after that you have to get the moves right with a bit of style or flare. fine. then after that you get the moves right with style, flare and a ...fancy outfit and so on. and this is all good. but god forbid if one dancer has a more fancy oufit than you!!!! or worse...a nicer behind!

Singers and guitarist on the other hand, can be appreciated without seeing them! maybe not fully but you can listen to singers or guitarist on cd and be well happy.

Ok so a singers music comes from their voice so they affect it with movements and expressions and also a fancy outfit.

Finally a guitarist music comes from his guitar so very little visual affectation is needed. but perhaps the odd fancy outfit and long greasy hair do.
I also think guitarists, especially classical and flamenco, like to think of themselves as pensive, thoughtful and humble but with hidden passion.

In conclusion...... I certainly rabble on a lot!!

Stu

Ps. JM is a wierdo!![&:]

Florian -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 3:48:16)

so what should we do, should we sitt here and pretend like we are normal , without egos, beautiful, perfect creatures.

or should we cut the **** and accept that we are , self involved, egotistical, emotional rolocosters, who have low self esteme and insecurities because they always force us (guitarists) to sitt at the back of the stage and everyone, Dancers, Singers are telling us what to do, no wonder.

and when we do get a compliment after a gig, we cant even enjoy it, cause inside our heads, we think "He dosent know" or "Hes just saying this cause he has to".

But it could be worst, u could be the cajon player [:D] if the guitarist has a day off, everyone goes home, if the cajon player has one.....[8|] whatever, someone does palmas [:)]

quote:

so what should we do, should we sitt here and pretend like we are normal

Oh, i should mention thow, when i say "we" I dont really mean me, i just included myself to make you all feel like its ok, really. i am not like you people, i really am nice and unegotistical.

scarfaze -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 7:30:40)

I guess you are right about this thing, in fact I think some harsh qritique for JM was born from the fact of jealousy, maybe because the man is open minded and is not "strictly" flamenco! I think music should not be tagged, I mean flamenco will be flamenco, rock will rock ect but remeber that Paco was also criticized for not being a "true" flamenco even for the fact that he used to hold the guitar in a "non standard" position and also because he has jazz and other influences in his music! So what did history teach us? That after all the harsh talk Paco has emerged as one of the TRUE inventors of Flamenco, a Genius!
Having said that, I agree with you that JM is not as good as Paco or other guitarists, but he is a good teacher! and I feel that he should take credit for that! His teaching books are really usefull!

Regarding the thing you said about Tomatito and the fact that teachers didnt go at his concert...... I think that this is a pretty ignorant thing and the reason that in my opinion many guitarists fail to become great is because they are so narrow minded. The right thing to do in my opinion was to go at his concert and "envy" him in a respectable way, in a way that you wish you could become as good as he is, and realizing that the only way to do that is to go home shut up and play!

Ron.M -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 7:38:51)

I don't think that's true.
JM mainly plays "strictly" Flamenco IMO.
Sure, he doesn't have a flashy technique.
But there are flashy players who IMO play less Flamenco than he.
I'm not keen on his stuff, but let's be fair here.

cheers,

Ron

Florian -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 8:48:59)

I think it started more cause the music didnt match the writeups and bio but thats just me [:)]

theres about 989 other guitarists out there we are not "jelous" of [:)]

Oooh Ailsa,
You are such a tease!
(Remember there are young boys on this Forum...[:D])

I think ideally women prefer men who are modest while talented, rich but generous, great with the housework and the kids, intelligent, handsome, loyal, passionate, sensitive and hung like a gorilla.

Sadly I'm not rich or handsome...[:D]

Ron

Forget about being competitive. I've just seen myself on video doing a rather fast, but also very drunken bulerias. In the words of the song ... "I'm never gonna dance again..."
By the way - It was Juan Martin introduced me to Flamenco way back in the early 80s so I guess I have a soft spot for the guy.

Yeah he just constantly pushes the boundryes of flamenco to new hights in the area of composition and technique, hes just an inovator, hes ahead of his time about 2000 years.

Lucky hes the only one the wrote the BOOK and gave it to us for free exposing the secret exotic sounds only passed down trough generations from father and son or noone else would have. Hes an explorer and painter in sound.

Hes a poor, modest, nice, giving , angel whos beeing attaked and victimised by evil forces of jelous guitarists.
Hes Tibet and we are China.
We have secret "Dont forghet to hate Juan this week" meetings.

This subject its a trap

Everytime someone joins the forum starts this up , and calls everyone jelous or a hater, who dosent like the music or think peticulary high of his playing and has the balls to be honest with you about his feelings on the subject according to his taste and what he considers to be good flamenco ,instead of telling you what you wanna hear out of fear of god forbit beeing unpopular ... and the only choice we have is shut up and watch beeing called "jelous" and "haters" or respond and then when we do respond we just set another thread for someone else who joins to reopen.

From now on, just tell me what you would like me to say about JM and il just say it, would save us the long waisting time on the thread, the part where you ask me "what have you done ?" ,the arguing and the apologising. My mind wont change, your mind wont change , so whats the point ?

On the other hand i am man enough to admit that perhaps i am wrong, lets talk facts, hard evidence no more of this "You shuld because he wrote the book" or because hes "JM" lets talk music, upload a track u think its good, let us talk the facts rather then just what we should or shouldnt feel, give me a real reason to like him as much as you do, rather then just words.

Thats pretty fair isnt it ? if i am trying to get you to like Nino de Pura i upload a track, not tell you that you should.

ps. I dont want to say "hhello to jo Litle frien" because of this [:D]

but i think Jm did see flamenco as one big great ***** just waiting to get *****.[;)]

ok, that was exagerated and a joke , but it was there to be made.

peace.

HemeolaMan -> RE: Juan Martin Articles/interviews (Jan. 17 2008 13:05:32)

i think if i met old juannie, i'd adopt him....maybe as a cousin or something

despite his dubious backstory, i think he'd probably be hilarious in person, he looks like the kinda guy who knows a joke or two

plus, he has all those cool outfits, a day on the town with him would be well spent.

o sure we'd stop by all the tapas restaurants and see whats cooking and who's playing. have discussions about how tall a cuban heel should be, what length the cuffs on a poofy shirt should be..... you know, guy stuff

after that, he'd use his enormous wealth and business accumen to get us back stage passes to hang out with pdl. where we all would have a good laugh and further discuss our picado.

me and my cousin juannie!
