Donald -> Literal Translation, do they mean us? (Dec. 5 2009 12:11:22)

I saw this listing for one of the events at the forthcoming Jerez Festival:

Teatro Villamarta, 9pm, Lunes 8th March
Compania Belen Maya, Bailes Alegres Para Personas Tristes
Artista Invitada, Olga Pericet

Thought for a while the shades of meaning within a language can have unintended effects. Never mind though those Spanish people have it covered they would use penoso(pathetic) if insult was meant.

Hi Donald,

Not sure what you mean exactly. The slogan "happy dances for sad people" sounds fine - just marketing to attract attention.

Penoso actually means embarrasing / shame..."que pena" - what a shame. It doesn't mean pathetic, that would be "patetico".

All the best,

Vic

I donĀ“t understand whats this thread about but...

I saw Olga Perice in march this year. Shes just 1 meter tall I guess... ^^ She danced with 2 gays. It was called chanta la mui or so.. dont remember the spelling :./ It was one of the best flamenco-dance-shows Ive seen so far. It was fabulous.

Victor, I think maybe Donald was joking, you know about the use of "sad" to mean pathetic? Maybe it's not used that way everywhere. Certainly in the UK we take it to mean that someone is a loser - "sad loser".

Ah, ok...thanks for clarifying that Ailsa. I wasn't familiar with that saying and quite honestly I didnt understand the topic, but thought I would help out with the translation part.

Vic
