You are absolutely right, Ron, and thank you for taking a stern position.

Here are a couple of ideas for the future:

1. Entries must be submitted by a Friday night and posted by noon on Saturday.
2. Scores must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, or be dismissed.
3. Judges should send their scores to the designated “administrator” who will in turn posts them all simultaneously (to avoid one comment to affect either way the next).
4. Comments should be merged: under the heading Challenger 1 there shall be all comments received for that contestant; same for Challenger 2, and so forth.
5. Scores should be averaged before posting the comments, so that there can be one scoreboard (perhaps, broken down as judge n. 1, n. 2 etc.)
6. Judges could remain anonymous, to absolutely guarantee impartiality and freedom of opinion.

Just a few thoughts. I have not lost interest in the "compostion challenge" and in fact will soon define and post its terms.

So when are we closing this one up and announcing a winner?

Now guys stop cluttering up this thread!! There's another one for comments, this is just for judging and the announcement of the winner. I'm admin, I'm in charge here!

Okay Ailsa, I got the message.. sorry.[&:]

Ailsa -> RE: The Cante accompaniment challenge!! Finally (Oct. 11 2009 1:52:06)

Sorry Jason, was I getting too controlling there? [:D][:D] Just wanted to keep all the discussion on one thread because actually some useful things for us to improve the challenges are coming up.

Agree that we should give the judges a deadline out of the respect for all the work. It is awful waiting. Though actually as soon as you hear the other entries, like Flo said, you think "oh dear....." [:D]

It's hard to be draconian with the judges because they are volunteers. I've done a lot of charity work managing volunteers, and there's a balance to be struck between being clear about what's expected and realising that they can just walk. I always think that people give according to what they can, and you have to just accept what people offer freely. But I also take the point that if we want this to work well, we have to take it seriously. Judges should give their scores within a timeframe, and make constructive and helpful comments.

Well I've done the sums - I can put up the list of who's who anytime I get the go-ahead [:)]

Guys I've just heard from Kate. She says she is sorry but Harold has been ill so she just hasn't been able to judge this time.

I'm going to announce the results on the other thread now.

Ricardo (not talking about him in the previous line) gave Lubina a 0, but while he's right with what he had to say, if you listen to the same thing again trying to disregard the palmas which somehow is totally out of place with everything (which i don't quite understand how it happens as we had a ready mp3 to download, now how come only the palmas is off beat? technically this is a mystery to me), the guitar sounds fine on the cante, although yes it's still off at places, but a 0 is not very nice...respectfully, i think you should have acknowledged the effort at least...it hasn't decided anything and would've saved the challenger from a sudden rise of adrenaline :)...i know i would've been disappointed...

xirdneH_imiJ,

dont worry about it [:D] , i respect ricardos opinion, track proably sounds off because im tapping my foot in the background. as i said on the thread my entry was under par for the challenge but i had fun making it and having a "fist of it" as they say in ireland.

best

henry

good on you for joining man

JasonMcGuire -> RE: The Cante accompaniment challenge!! Finally (Oct. 12 2009 14:59:03)

Perhaps it was a bit beyond Henry, but because you at least tried, we are ALL going to do everything we can within reason to help you develop better rhythm. By sticking your neck out, many others who need to develop better rhythm are going to get some valuable insight.

When you post something the next time it will be better and I am sure everyone else who took the challenge and hopefully the other judges will be there to comment and offer more support and tips. You are a trooper and the community here is committed to helping.

Looking forward to hear your next posting!

J
