This is an audio only submission?? The last contest was video. I would much prefer a video contest, personally.

Graham_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 10:38:28)

The last beginners challenge was audio only.

cathulu -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 11:04:33)

Hey rObbie, maybe your problem is that in the first bar it is finger three that is going to the high e string at the 6th fret! Pay careful attention to the fingering! Where you can't reach, don't bother. Just play the notes you can and arpeggio on those notes. Some of the melody will be missing but it will still sound OK and you can keep going. Cheers

cathulu -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 11:06:09)

Wrong! The last contest was audio, video came later to prove the performance and that was optional, although everyone provided a video if I recall correctly. To keep it anonymous it has to be audio only. Competitors can always put a video up later if they want.

r0bbie -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 11:37:39)

Hi Cathulu,

You are right, its the third finger as I realized later that evening. But I found a workaround that sounds even better. [;)] This way I still play the notes on the bar but different from the TAB.

It is going slow but Itry to practice a half hour at least every day and then continue to finish the guitar I am working on.

Cheers,
Rob.

polishcomedy -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 12:32:25)

I didn't mean the last beginner's challenge. I meant the most recent challenge we had, which I think was an intermediate or advanced one. I haven't been here long enough to know about the previous beginner's challenge [:)]

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 12:40:07)

Hi Patrick,

Jason's challenge was a video one, but all the Foro challenges have been mp3 and anonymous.

Btw I just had a look at your youtube site - there's some pretty impressive stuff on there like this:
http://www.youtube.com/polishcomedy#play/uploads/0/bvTHdo493kA

You may be a 'beginner' at flamenco, but you are a fine guitarist. I'm still struggling getting the notes clean for the tangos challenge, and listening to you play I think I may as well give up!!

polishcomedy -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 14:39:04)

Thanks, Ailsa! Even though I'm a flamenco beginner, this piece didn't pose very much difficulty. If I do well in this do I get placed in the intermediate category? How does it work? Best of luck to you, don't give up!

hey Patrick,
if it didn't pose much difficulty for you then you're already too advanced for the beginner's challenge. there will be an intermediate challenge coming up soon and you're more than welcomed to join that one.

i just checked out some of your stuff on youtube. great playing! i definitely think you're much more suited for the intermediate challenge and invite you to join.

polishcomedy -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 2 2009 16:23:23)

I won't lie, those chords in the beginning are a tad tricky to get under the fingers at first. I'd love to be in the intermediate challenge, but that might be too advanced, I'd have to see/hear the piece. I don't know how well the other contestants have the beginner piece down, but if there are some entrants who did a good job then I'd like to still be considered, if possible. I'm not really sure how to rate my flamenco skills, to be honest.

NeZ -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 8 2009 16:15:29)

I'm not sure if I'm going to get this done in time. My summer has been absolutely crazy with running around and work, etc. I've hardly had time to pick up my guitar at all. I've looked at the tab a few times and watched the video a couple times, but haven't buckled down to learn this yet. I'm hoping I get some time this week. If I can't devote a couple hours to it this week I may not have enough time to learn it.

Louis_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 9 2009 21:47:40)

After a week away karate training, and with the bruises to prove it, I'm really going to concentrate on practising this piece on my new guitar (a Kevin Richards blanca) this week.

I must grow my nails quickly[:)]

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 9 2009 23:18:26)

OK guys

3 weeks today!!

Looking forward to hearing you on your new guitar Louis. My son does a type of karate too - Taijutsu. He's pretty good, only two grades away from black belt. He plays electric guitar tho, so not a real guitarist like us!! [;)][:D]

Louis_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 17 2009 2:05:18)

Hi

With only 2 weeks to go I'm practising a bit every day and enjoying the challenge.

I'm finding the barres and some of the stretches/fretting particularly challenging

How is everybody else doing?

[sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]Louis_B[sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 17 2009 2:22:33)

Thanks for that reminder Louis
2 weeks today!!!

Like you I'm finding the barres difficult - really hard to get it clean on every string. I'm still making fluffs, and am wondering how many times I'll have to record it before I send my entry in!

A plea to all challengers
It's really hard knowing which level to pitch yourself at sometimes, and I think quite a few players are unsure whether they are beginner or intermediate. I think the rule is this:

This is a challenge and the aim is for us all to get a little better through practising. If you have had to work and practise this piece you are welcome to join this challenge. But if you learnt it in an afternoon and just run through it occasionally you are probably really intermediate!! Everyone can upload their playing and ask for comments of course, just not as part of the challenge.

Does that seem reasonable?

Louis_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 23 2009 3:38:30)

Just a week and a day to go!!

I hope that everyone is practising really hard and I look forward to hearing all of your recordings.

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 23 2009 3:52:22)

Yes I'm still hanging on in there. Not sure what practise I will get done this week as we have hired bicycles and are going cycling in the New Forest!

Btw challengers, the code names for this challenge will be astral bodies, that is stars, planets, galaxies, constellations, that sort of thing. You can choose your name and if your chosen name is taken Anthony will help you find an alternative.

beno -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 24 2009 13:51:36)

Hi everyone!

I'm so sad about this but I have to cancel both my int/beginner challenge.
I kept putting this off but now I see clearly that I'm not going to have the time to participate in any of this, not right now.

But the good thing about this that I may be accepted to a Jazz conservatory from september. I have to prepare for my entrance-exams, that means learning a huge number of standards, theory, practicing guitar, piano AND some singing as well....
That's a LOT. My little son is just about 3 months old....[:D] And I started playing some gigs with a very talented gipsy jazz guitarist as well that also needs a long repertoire to be complete -altought the plan the 2 repertoire have lot in common.
There are other reasons as well but I don't want to bore anybody..

Sorry but this time i have to quit, but would like to encourage the others to do their best! And I may can take part in the composition-challenge as I have some stuff in my pocket yet [;)]

Graham_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 28 2009 6:22:55)

Good luck everyone!![:)]

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 28 2009 7:31:08)

Well beno, you are still going to be involved in music, that's the important thing. Keep logging into the Foro though to keep in touch!

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 28 2009 14:02:04)

Guys I've just updated the top of this thread with the latest details so check there to make sure you know where to send your mp3s.

Good luck everyone!![:)]

Louis_B -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 29 2009 7:36:20)

Recording done and sent.

Good luck to the other participants!

at_leo_87 -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 29 2009 9:46:12)

when you email me your submission, please include your user name as well so i know who is who. good luck everyone!

cathulu -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 29 2009 20:15:28)

What is done is done, warts and all - I can't record myself anymore, in fact I can't stand hearing it anymore! It is a tricky little beast that darn Tango. It has been submitted.

Good luck to all the participants!

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 30 2009 4:35:39)

OMG I can't do it!!!!

First my fingers are dry, then they are sticky.

Then one of the kids walks in in the middle of the recording, or one of the cats scratches at the door.

Then there's a police car wailing outside so I have to close the window in case it's the flamenco police. [:D][:D]

I just hate recording!!! Why do I organise these challenges????

Ailsa -> RE: **Tangos Beginners' Challenge here!!** (Aug. 30 2009 6:43:36)

That's it - it's gone. As cathulu says, warts and all. I know when I hear the other entries I'm going to cringe at how much more work mine needs.

Looking on the bright side, 8 weeks ago I couldn't attempt it, and now I can [:)][:)] just er...... not quite as well as I'd like to!

Thanks to Ramzi for the original, to Anthony for being admin and to ToddK for offering a great prize.

Best to you all [:)]
