You are a fabulous musician Todd. I would still love to see you learn this challenge's falseta. Others have mentioned blisters on the thumb from working on it. That blister you get that turns into a really nice calous and means that you are a few steps closer to having your thumb thechnique in order. Nigel has the score and tab done for it and we will ne releasing it tomorrow on my website. I will leave it here too in case you want to have a peek.

I all but have no choice but to take you up on that good sir[:D][:D]

My thumb could certainly use a good blistering!!! Hell yeah, that will help get
my thumb tech in order. I totally need that.

Again, thanks for the straight shooting and great insight. You do for me, that thing that truly Great players do, you make me want to practice my a$$ off, and to dig deeper emotionally.
That is the mark of a great teacher and a great player, which you are.

Thanks amigo!

OH yeah, i bet you'll find your capo next to your beer[;)] Thats probably where your tuner is too. [8D]

Okay. The deadline has passed. Yaelisa will review and make critiques tomorrow. She is looking forward to it. Best of luck to all participants. I will post Yaelisa's comments and announce our winner here when she is done. Thanks to all for making the challenge fun.
I hope those who worked on the falseta but didn't submit an entry found it to be a helpful study.

Tomorrow......

Doitsujin -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 8 2009 1:01:26)

I checked my submission from my PC in the university..and here my audio has a very strong reverb..it sounds completely nuts... I hope that depends on this computer here.... I didnt want such a ****ing big reverb... [:(][:(][:(]

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 8 2009 1:16:28)

Don't worry Doit. It sounds fine over here.

ARJR -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 8 2009 13:11:29)

I haven't posted here in a few years but I just wanted to say after listening to all the challenges that this is probably THE COOLEST guitar forum on the internet.

Compared to other guitar forums who's participants just ramble about playing. there are so many here that can!!

You guys have something special here.....

Florian -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 8 2009 13:33:20)

You are welcome! 2 posts in ca. 4 years... thats not much, isn´t it? [:D]

Yes I also think this forum here is something special. I think it is the mix of so different characters who in total share the love to flamenco. And we are from all over the world..thats amazing. The challenges are really the best thing here (thanks to the father of our challenges Florian ;.) The challenges push us to become better in an interesting entertaining way. I like it so much because we are international and young old, guitarists, luthiers, dancers, rich, poor, .. all is present here. And it works! Thats awesome...

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 8 2009 23:47:27)

Here are Yaelisa's comments and the winner of the Challenge....

Anant Patel: nice aire, good technique, funky. Strong tempo.

Laszlo Schaffer: played it without a metronome, that was ballsy. However, he went out of compas towards the 3/4 mark, so he could have used the metronome for the discipline. I think he should continue to practice this slowly but with a metronome to develop rhythm.

Ramzi Bey : good tempo, good rhythm, good hands....I think he should attack the accents just a bit more and it would improve the overall
performance.

Doitsujin: Very good technique, a bit sloppy here and there, he expresses confidence when he plays and accents well to give it aire.
I think he should not start with tapado, he needs to practice that more.

Nigel: He needs to be able to HEAR when he gets behind and jumpstart the engine in compas, however, he played most of this
out of compas.

Matic: He played with a relaxed air that I liked, and if this is the hardest falseta he's ever learned, he did very well.

Maissam: Started out fine then got very behind, and could not get back in compas. Its important to be able to do that.

In summary, it was obvious that everyone worked very hard. This is a hard falseta rhymically, and it would be easy to get lost. However,
my main comments are that everyone could improve on the notion of taking a complex falseta and being more aggressive on the accents without losing the relaxed quality required.....a very hard proposition but many of you were on the path to that goal. Secondly, compas is #1 and when you lose it, you must learn to stop and listen for split seconds and get back in. You can always add an extra 6 beats to anything and it still is a cool falseta, but getting out of compas is never cool.

The player that was the most funky was Anant Patel. He did a super flamenco lick during the tapado, and his tapado was the best. Doitsuijn didn't have great tapado, but his technique and command was the best during the falseta, except for the end, where I didn't like how he ended. This was a hard decision because both players have qualities I really like. But I will pick Doitsuijn.

Congradulations Doitsujin!

Jason and Yaelisa,

Thanks for the comments [:)]

Congratulations Doitsujin well played you are a deserving winner.

I hope everyone enjoys my transcription.... it's harder than it looks!

Ron.M -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 0:33:34)

Yaaaaay for Doit!! [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif][sm=Smiley Guitar.gif][sm=Smiley Guitar.gif][sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

And very strong entries by the other contenders too!

A heck of a falseta technically IMO and I'm amazed that some of the players I know here managed to pull out the stops and rise to the challenge, despite having only a few years experience in Flamenco guitar.

Great job everyone.

cheers,

Ron

"... und Riedelradel fährt den Sieg nach Hause."

[:D] Nice one Doitsujiiiiin! Is that the Carpio you spoke of?
Spibo2007 had a great compas and intro, learning that will be my next challenge.

Great job Doit!! You really nailed it!

Congratulations!!

Matic -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 2:02:05)

Thanks to Yaelisa and Jason again. [:)]
A very fun challenge! Good job everyone.

Doit congrats!!!![sm=Smiley Guitar.gif] I totally liked your entry. In contrary to Yaelisa, I dig your tapado intro and compas before the falseta. For me it was really groovy, I was really surprised Yaelisa didn't like it.
Anyway, I think you really deserve the prize!

Matic

Arash -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 2:11:51)

Congratulations Everyone.
I was really amazed how much everyone has improved!!
Do you guys practice 24 hours a day or what ?

Doit, Congrats! You deserve it [;)]

---

Ok, but please someone list the videos of everyone, i couldn't find everyone.

rombsix -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 3:06:26)

Congratulations Doit! This was the FIRST time I had heard or seen you play, and quite, frankly, you BLEW ME away! I had no clue you were such a great player! Very good technique! Bravo! Are you Japanese, or Spanish? [8D]

And that tapado bit at the beginning: I don't really know whether to hate or love it. It was weird to me, but I LOVED that part where you dug into the low E string with your pulgar and it sounded like a dog barking! That was awesome! [:D]

I was sure you were going to win with such a performance. I could have played the falseta much better, and given you a better ride for your money, but I didn't have enough time to practice it with final exams and such. Had only about 6 or 7 hours spread over two days to do so. Still, that is no excuse for the AMAZING performance you pulled off.

And what about that video quality? DAMN! It was crystal clear! What setup / software do you use? How large was the size of the file you uploaded onto YouTube?

Ole! [:D]

PS: At 0:39 in your YouTube video, you played an A instead of the correct G# (according to Jason's explanation). [8D][;)]

gj Michelob -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 5:43:57)

Bravo Doits... you were having fun playing that falseta and I enjoyed your performance, well done.

beno -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 6:33:48)

Hi everyone, I'm László, and also participated, though one couldn't hear about me much so far...hope it's gonna change in the future, but I'm rather the reader type, not the writer [:)]

Congrats to everyone, especially to Doit for winning, and Matic, cause as for me, he was the best....

I'm sorry a little bit that I didn't had the time to prepare properly, but I noticed the contest lately, and had even a very hectic time during learning..but never mind, I still feel good about participating in this fun-challenge, so a big THANK YOU to Jason!

After all, these contests are pushing us harder to become better, so I'm looking forward to the next one...

michel -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 6:47:50)

OLE to everyone, you guys were excellent!
congratulations Doit, great performance [;)]

Doitsujin -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 7:13:20)

Heey!! I am extremely happy I really won the challenge!! Thats awesome! ( ^^.)bb

Big respect to the other challengers! I wasnt sure to win. There were some strong playings. But its a pitty, I still didnt find Anant Patel. Could someone post all the links? I need to see his tapado!! :.D

Thank you all for the nice comments!! And yes, I take the comments of Yaelisa and Jason serious. Well,.. the tapado was really a bit sloppy... I didnt pay so much attention to that but I should. Because I am playing for a danceclase por buleria at the moment and there I start with tapado before a small falseta.. I will definitely work on that! Yaelisa is a dancer, and if she doesnt like it.. I have to change it..

I have exactly the same opinion like Jason,. I was sloppy during the falseta and of course with the ending.. [&:] I wont complain.. it was not the best invention.

Winning this challenge means really a lot to me. I dont know how it would have ended if some other guys would have entered but I was lucky! They didnt have time! hehe

Ok. Thank you all!! Jason for the challenge, Yaelisa for the critics, you all for the comments, the foro for giving us this place to have fun and my girlfriend who I showed the first record I did this sunday. She said that is crap do it again! Well,.. because of her I skipped Man in black II and Matrix III and recorded the better version. [:D]
She is actually japanese and the reason for my japanese touch here and there in my profile. [;)]
Rombsix, I recorded with a canon ixus70 photocamera 640x480. I recorded in parallel with a mic of my computer. The file was around 160Mb.
But I dont understand anything of mastering.. so it still sounds more like a cheap photocam mic.
Todd could you post a very briefly overview of how to master a flamenco guitar? Just some tips on equalizer, loudness, bass, reverb, mixer and the things I didnt hear about so far? I think everyone would like to know more about that.. You are perfect in this discipline.

Hey Deniz, yes thats my Carpio I talked about. It is a nice guitar but still has some weaknesses.. Maybe a conde in future. [;)] But its made by the father who made guitars for conde in past.. (Well, I heared that somewhere..)

I hope I didnt forget anything to say. Well, I´m happy to concentrate on more great compositions of Jason now!! Yeeeahh!!! Thats the greatest thing!!! I really LOVE his compositions and totally happy to learn more from him!! MAn !! YES YES YES!!!!

Doitsujin -> RE: Flamenco-lessons.com turns 2 - A new challenge... (Jun. 9 2009 7:19:23)

The tab is nice! I also wrote a version to check where the accents are and where I could build up tension that make sense. Your tab is a bit different to the playing of Jason. But its perfect to learn this falseta. I mean everybody changes details in the end. Me also..
