Are there any other lower level, pre-intermediate players out there who have taken a stab at this? Sometime last month I spent a few hours, in two sittings, with the absolutely fantastic Detailed Explanation Video, and surprised myself by actually getting the notes and fingering down. That’s much more than I ever would have thought I would have been able to do, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. That is until I sat down and tried to play it in time along with the slowed vid and was rudely reminded just how over my head the falseta is. The syncopation in this sucker is over the freaking charts! So, at this point I can play all the notes properly- slowly, and with an erratic but ballpark approach to rhythm, but nothing close to actual bulerias compas. Since getting the fingering down I haven’t spent any real, serious time trying to work on this properly, but in the remaining time left I do hope to give it the ol’ college try. I don’t think there’s any realistic hope that I’ll be able to play this properly, even at the slowed speed. Far more likely is that I’ll just end up grabbing short bits of it and repurposing them in an easier, simpler context. Regardless of how far along I actually get towards playing this falseta properly, the time and work that I’ve put into it so far has made for a really good learning experience. Even that one afternoon spent with the detailed vid made for a great lesson in digging deep into something way beyond my current abilities and getting a sense of how things work on a higher, more sophisticated level, and if I had just left it at that one brief experiment, it still would have been worth it. So, if there are any other pre-intermediate types out there who’ve been intimidated by this falseta and haven’t tried messing around with it at all, I strongly encourage you to give it a shot and at least try to fool around with it a bit. Spend a couple hours with that detailed explanation, and I guarantee that you and your playing will be the better for it. Besides which, it’s a lot of fun!
