No, they will block your IP address.

RE: Question (in reply to Guest

I would assume that it works the opposite of a sinking IP.

RE: Question (in reply to Guest

Typically, on forums, banning people can be difficult, unless the person has a static IP. Static IPs are rare, they usually cost more, because a static IP allows you to host things, and most ISPs don't want you gobbling up their bandwidth.

My IP is dynamic. Keeping the same IP is determined by lease time. The IP is leased for, 24/48 hours, and even if I power my modem/router off for a day, the DHCP server will recognise my MAC and give assign the same IP. However, if I go into my router, and release, and then renew my IP, I get assigned a new one.

Some ISPs have shorter leases.

My question would be how bannings occur. Are the admins starting with temp bans or will they be jumping straight to perma bans?

The only way to do ban me for good would be to ban a whole node of my ISP. And I think this would affect at least 2 other users on the foro.

Most forums are incapable of a MAC ban.

Permanent bans are not done lightly by admin and there are multiple warnings before they occur. Members do not get banned for one off infractions (there would be no forum) Admin had to delete 6 offensive posts and suffer a barrage of complaints before this came about.

RE: Question (in reply to Exitao

surely any banned person returning under a different name would behave in 1 of a few ways.....

1. continue how they left off = Banned again
2. start out nice and reformed then revert back to type = Banned again
3. or turn over a new leaf under their new identity = No ban and valuable
new member

so either way it should work out... or maybe not..

why you thinking of getting banned sean??

EDIT: never mind sean I think I know what/who you're talking about...

I haven't visited properly for a few days and just been catching up.

RE: Question (in reply to Pimientito

My question would be different - does it matter if they come back under a new name?

If they come back and start making trouble again they will be banned again. Some people are so distinctive in style they will be instantly recognised.

If they come back and contribute positively, no-one will mind. Everyone deserve another chance to behave better next time.

Well, I understand why it happened. It seems to me that most enforcement/disciplinary policies should be progressive.

Temp bans often solve problems without loss of members. Just because some people will be pleased, does not mean the forum doesn't lose out.

RE: Question (in reply to Exitao

I agree that it is a shame that someone with such an obvious wealth and knowledge of cante history cannot participate in a sane and civil manner on this forum. Temp bans will solve problems of temporarily heated situations but they will not solve a continuous negative behaviour pattern. Every fair chance was given and admin showed almost superhuman restaint on this one.

RE: Question (in reply to Pimientito

So I don't wanna stir things up or anything, but surely the banned member is already back posting under guest... so there's your answer sean.

I guess the question now is, can moderators ban guests should they continue to misbehave????

I don't think guests can post here--only members can post. If anything admin waited too long in this case.

I don't think that's how it works Stu. As Pgh says only members can post. When the person was banned all his posts became re-labelled as Guest. But he won't be able to post any more with the name he used.

Ailsa,
You know me hen...
I never BAN anybody...
I might occasionally withdraw somebody's posting privileges..
But they still have access to the Forum to read stuff etc.

cheers,

Ron

RE: Question (in reply to Exitao

Yeah...excluding IP Addresses is a bit of a waste of time IMO, since most home subscriber's IP changes every week or so.

If someone resubscribes I can usually tell from the writing style etc...

I trust that more....in fact by now I could probably imitate posts from many members here.

cheers,

Ron

Yeah absolutely, that's a very important distinction. No reason why everyone can't read what others have to say if they are interested.

Thanks Ron.

It looks to me that he wasn't banned, but his account was deleted. Banning just locks an account and prevents the username from logging in. Deleting an account, might actually remove the user name and set all posts to "guest."
