Shiny trousers

OK that subject got your attention? I hope so because this is a serious learning point here

So I was just playing a short set at our new arts centre in our town, a Solea and Minera. I wanted to look smart, so wore a really nice pair of silk trousers. My mistake was not practising in them before I left the house. I discovered they were slippy and the guitar kept slipping down my leg and I had to keep adjusting it This led to a slight loss of compas a couple of times while I pulled it back towards my hip! I'll have a look at the vid later and see if I can bear to upload any of it. I don't think it was too gruesome, but I'll need to check after I've downed my stiff drink.

OK, the moral of the story is - practice in the clothes you are going to play in before your gig!!

Well - get you! You must be making really rapid progress. Congratulations. How many performances does this make?

Try Keeping a chammy leather in your guitar case and you can drape it over your knee if ever you need to. It should hold the guitar steady and you can wear whatever you like.

I dare say that it is exquisitely feminine an issue, most guys wouldn’t wear silk, satin or chiffon pants… (not that there would be any wrong if they did)

OK, then how about a chammy suit and a silk scarf?

I just heard on the radio the other day that Marc Bolan had a velvet Cadillac.

Velvet!!

Well... when I get rich I'm gonna have a red velvet finish Conde with chammy finish body!

Uh Huh!

cheers,

Ron

Alisa, I just had a similar experience earlier this week. Sitting in for a dance class for the first time was also the first time I'd taken the guitar out or the house, so it was essentially a live performance for me. I guess it was nerves or general awkwardness, but at a few points the guitar was sliding all over the place. The clincher is that I was sporting the same jeans and sweatshirt combo I wear most every day. At least you have an untested-trouser excuse!

Congrats on the solo set!

You don't have this problem if you don't wear trousers.

...unless you are Antonio Canales.

Another potential problem item of apparel for guitarists are bracelets. Admitedly, its only some guys who can get away with them in the first place but I remember a friend of mine talking about a time he was on stage doing some heavy rasgueo and somehow the clasp on his bracelet came loose and got tied up in the guitar strings.
He had to stop mid piece, apologise to the audience and unceremoniously go off stage with his wrist attached to the guitar to get someone to help him undo it again.

Pimiento that is a funny :-) but also sound admonishment to keep performance gear simple and unintrusive...

Sam_n, what other than pants.... Do you suggest skirts or hairy legs?

haha... Yes. I had a similar happenbing when I was younger and got the driving licens... I wanted to show my family what Ive learned in the first-aid class. When I tryed to push my father into the recovery position his leg allways slipped to the ground... I tryed 10 times. It didnt work on the carpet with his slippy socks!!! That was a barrel-burst from the beginning to the end...
(But I got the keys for mums car later!!hehe!)

One trick I've discovered is to use a computor mouse pad between my guitar and my right thigh. It has a non-slip side which I put next to the guitar. It helps a lot.

I'm not sure what it's made of, sort of a rubbery plastic-like composite substance.
