Oh man, that dude is absolutely The coolest guy in Krefeld, not just "one of" (I think he even said he's the only one...)

The funniest is, he asks the biker "hy Marc, Who is the coolest here?" and the biker yells "You not" and escapes. And it has been in TV.. hahaha...

Just letting everyone know that Gerardo himself had no part in the quote about one of the best guitarist in the Universe.

And as volunteer run non-profit organization in Pittsburgh we are only too happy take any help Pgh_flamenco can offer to sell out the venue.

Thanks Simon for putting up the banner.

Speaking of the best technique, probably Paco isn't the best any more. Gerardo among some others surpasses his technique. Don't you think so?

He said best guitarist and not best actual technique.
Yes, there are some guitarists who can play with cleaner and faster and a little bit better technique now because of Pacos age.......BUT... when speaking of the best compositions, Paco was , is and most probably will be the best guitarist ever.

RE: Best guitarist in the universe? (in reply to Doitsujin

Not only is Paco the best in the universe, he's the best who ever existed in the universe. I think, then again, Jimi was also the very best ever. Gerardo would be the best if only he was more famous. Maybe his agent could get him on a reality TV show with Pam Anderson. Then he would truly be the best. Better than Paco, who wastes his time fishing.

As far as selling out a venue, the sad fact is we are about the only ones who give a crap about flamenco guitar. Even the best flamenco guitarists in the universe. Just us. Not many other people care whatsoever. Even flamenco singers and dancers love the guitar most when it's making them able to do their thing. The rest want to see Obama caught with his pants down with britany spears. Which actually I would find entertaining as well.

Well:
I think Paco is the best and no one will ever be better than him (At least no one will do what he have done).
He's the greatest Flamenco composer.
(That's my opinion)

I seriously wonder why Gerardo isn't getting more international exposure...lots of people who aren't into flamenco still know names like Sabicas, Paco (of course) and Vicente.

Gerardo’s Pittsburgh Performance (in reply to Doitsujin)1 votes

Gerardo and company put on a great show. He started with a solo piece and was joined by the other performers afterward. It seemed like he did a lot of songs in Rodena tuning. The only tune I recognized was a jazzy Sevillana. There were instances of his usual virtuosity, but for the most part he played what seemed to be the basic chords, etc. that you hear in the palos when accompanying. I didn’t notice much picado and he didn’t perform anything with an extended--or even short--tremolo part. Gerardo’s pulgar technique is better than most players’ picado and his alzapua is incredible. Absent was his Marvi. He played what appeared to me to be a Conde Media Luna Blanca. I guess he was concerned about the climate change?

Carmen Cortes performed practically to the point of exhaustion—she spared nothing.

The show was a great overview of the world of flamenco and may have been set up to help the performers deal with the time difference and lack of sleep. Several times only one performer sang on stage alone. The singers and percussionist all sat at a table at the front of the stage and sang as if in their home or at a small social gathering. As an encore they all came out and tried their hand at performing each other’s specialty--Jesus danced while everyone clapped and Jesus played guitar while Gerardo danced. Apart from the songs that were obviously expressions of great suffering the overall tone of the night was lighthearted and joyous.

The performers were all in great spirits and smiled readily. An interesting moment was when Jesus, standing in front of the venue before the show, asked me for a light for his cigarette.

Thank you chapman_g for a truly memorable night--I didn’t know you were a rasta man! (and let’s have Gerardo back again soon).

Darn, I missed it! Bunch of my friends saw it, so I will hear more later. I know that Gerardo was supposed to play solo, but as we discussed this summer, his injury earlier this year has forced him to take it a bit easy with concertizing. Hence the larger group and solo singing etc. This was also a "make up" concert from the spring time show he cancelled (when he was injured), so I think it is great he kept his word and came in town. Just bad timing for me darn it! I played for La Tati last night.

The marvi guitar, he has not been playing much that I have seen the last 2 years. He did some stuff with his Robert Ruck guitar, but honestly, the Conde has always been his main "axe". He has 3 blancas I have seen him use. The one you guys saw was from Atocha, and is from the 90's I believe. maybe mark remembers the date. I played it, it is pretty "stock" as far as conde's go.

Glad you got to see him, lucky you!

Ricardo

Great show. I was able to get down to it, too, along with Ilia from the foro and some other great people from Ottawa. I had forgotten about Gerardo's injury and now it makes sense because he was more understated than I would expect but it was still fantastic. Michael organized a juerga at a restaurant afterward but the female singer Davinia was a little ill so the band had to leave to check on her and the mood was sombre for a while (she turned out all right though). After they left, Ramin from flamenco-teacher and Jose from D.C. and Michael and even a few classical players, too... they all played some great music and we had a good time despite the band's absence. Some of us were lucky enough to run in to Gerardo at the hotel, too. Unfortunately, I ran in to them all alone and their daughter was not there to interpret so I did my best in a few Spanish phrases to communicate some things to them. I was a nervous wreck and probably made an ass of myself! But they all seemed very gracious even though I may have interrupted their breakfast a bit. Big thanks goes out to Michael Chapman for seemingly single-handedly organizing everything.

A few fun moments at the concert: Gerardo played one falseta twice which I thought was a little funny even though it was a goody. He also started a falseta just as Davinia began to sing once which gave me a laugh. He also hit his guitar by mistake on the SM57 mic at one point, woops. There was also, as John mentioned above, a time for some solo cante from Davinia and Jesus accompanied by Lucas, the cajon player, all of them doing nubillos on a table that Lukas brought out himself. The stage door made for some quirky moments because it had no knob and the artists went to push the door every time they left the stage when they should have pulled somehow. And then it would swing open because it didn't close properly. So when Jesus and Davinia came out to sing their tonas etc... you could hear Gerardo's guitar backstage practicing, and when Lucas was out with them, I could see in his eyes that he was having a good chuckle about that.

Overall, definitely worth the long drive for me and others. Carmen's choreography was very well matched to Gerardo's music, too. And Lucas was a very complimentary cajon player who I had not seen before.

Sorry not to respond sooner amigo! La Tati was great, a true maestra. The two singers where world class and nice guys. Jose (pepe) jimenez el Bocadillo, and Antonio Jimenez El Porra. Antonio actually is a cousin of Viejin and played guitar REALLY well, but was kind of shy about it. Tati brought her guitarist with her, Basilio Garcia, who was great too and a very nice guy. I learned a couple of his falsetas for Tati and backed him up (she did Siguiriyas/martinete and Alegrias), and he more or less backed me on the other numbers of the group that i knew well. And we sort of traded falsetas in the tangos solo. Anyway a great time. Tati is still here giving a workshop and we partied last night:

I did not know this topic is about the Nunez show in Pittsburgh - the name of the topic is strange. That weekend in Pittsburgh was awesome - getting to know Gerardo, seeing him perform, having a cigarette with him :) - it was cool. And of course we met very nice people from Toronto, Pittsburgh and Washington DC. As Conrad have already said - definitely worth the long drive!
