So whats everyone listening to atm ?

David Cereduella has released another album he and Jesus Losada acompanies Sara in Por ti santo..i love everything that guys does and shes got one of those voices i like...so i am listening to that alot and...a few things from Herencia Flamenco series

almost forghot...dont go out and buy the Sara album on my word (not that you would lol but i dont wana take any chances you abusing me cause u dont like it if u like that sort of stuff fine) but its alot of tangos and rumbas, I mean she has a brilliant voice, i like her voice very much but this album is a litlle on the soft side (great shame about that)...however i am a huge Cereduella fan and like to hear the way he does everything..

and id love to hear some more seriuos palos from sara..il have to see if she made other albums..i just dont have much info about her

Dusty old guitar cd's off the back of the shelf i haven't listened to for ages, Jose Antonio Rodriguez eponymously titled cd, and 3 Guitarras Flamencos, compilation of tracks from Manolo Franco, Jose Antonio Rodriguez and Quique Paredes.

The JAR selections are from the previously mentioned cd, but the tracks from Manolo Franco and Quique Paredes are from albums long deleted/never made it from vinyl to cd, though i note the MF album "Aljibe" has just been re-released as a book transcribed by Claude Worms with accompanying cd. Dunno if it's the complete album or selections (anyone know?).

oh yeah, and i listened to kind of blue by miles davis earlier too...

'took a brisk walk in freezing New York as lunch break, and enjoyed alternating a few tracks from Richard Marlow's "Madera Sonora" with Gerardo Nunez' latest, "Jucal" on my iPod.

The game emphasized even more clearly what clean, translucent and yet passionate sound both artists truly posses.

I'm currently enjoying El Peles 8 guitarras y 1 piano. It hasn't been played many rounds yet, but I like it a lot.

Right now i'm spending more time on youtube than listening to records.. i got hooked by charnes channel.. it has such a huge load of everything.

whats that all about give me some impressions..i have seen it advertised but seeing the piano scared me off a litlle i must admit and also whats with the 8 guitars ? is that 8 guitars at once ? that could be 6 guitars to many for my ears lol or do they mean each track is acompanied by a diff guitarist ?

piano in flamenco is fine if thats what they wanna do but anything more then one track and i am ready to fast foward...its a fine melodyc instrument but it lacks the attack and diff dynamics a guitar can achive for flamenco..IMO..its a nice novelty but not more then 1 or 2 tracks at the max for me

gives us some impressions..and how bigger part does the piano play in it ? is it flamenco or more pop ?

i hate those overproduced tracks with too many instruments ...too many fx.. they always play them in classes and i cant stand em...its like a block of sound
behind the singer...its hard to get personal with any of them..or even focus on the good bits...they are dynamics killers..i cant pay proper attention to the voice if the backing sounds like the fx from starwars...and just betwen you and me and 1000 other people that might read this..i am starting to get a litlle tired of oud in flamenco too..i only like it if its Radio Tarifa cause when i put then on i am in the mood for oud and thats what u expect ...(but u know me...u know i dont like to complain )

overproduced tracks remind me of that guy at the market wearing all his jewlery at once

Had Piedro Sierra and La Tobala in the car fairly constantly recently. La Tobala is a great singer and I like that she records a lot of Material that you in hear in bars and in the streets but hasnt been recorded very well before.
Wanna get Pedro Sierras solo album next week. Does anyone have it?
Also found the Fiesta Gitana recording from 1966 last week with a load of Juan Maya Marote that i havent heard before. I also like the solo albums of Antonio Rey and the new Pepe Justicia "Trece Noches"

Today I´ve been French Polishing. It takes time and is very monotousous, so I like listning to something long. Good to have a flamenco break once in a while as well.

Stravinsky: Le Sacre du Printemps
Shostakovitch: Symphony number 7

Tomorrow I will do a full Wagner opera. (loud)

It's a storm of guitars trying to fight off a huge piano, like an infernal bullfight!

Just pulling your leg. :-P It's one guitar at the time, and only one piano track. Its fairly rooted to the ground and tasteful in terms of arrangement and production. It has some hard to place and unusual sounding renditions, but mostly recognizable palos (there's a pair of spaced out tracks). It has a tiny pinch of unison choirs, like on almost all new albums after some date long ago.. but that's made up for with very nice guitar playing.

Hmmm, eight to one.... I still think the piano would win.

Reminds me of the story about Lord Beacham (the conductor) describing a Bach concerto for two harpsichords as sounding like 'two skeletons copulating in a cupboard'.

Well with guitar and piano it is more like a mouse trying to rape and elephant.

Lately it's been Chano Lobato's "La Nuez Mosca" with Pedro Bacan.

Amazing album; great cante and incredible accompanyment. Pedro sounds amazing on this album. He has definately become my all time favorite guitarist now. There's something about his music and style of playing that really grabs me. It's sad to know how he passed away too.

Does anyone have a copy of Pedro Bacan's 'Alurican'? I want to buy it, but it's discontinued. If someone could send me it, that would be great. (pm if you want. I may have something to trade too!)

cheers!
Mark

RE: So whats everyone listening to atm ? (in reply to MarkMc

I LOVE Pedro Bacan and especially his album "Alurican". I had the good fortune to be in a small bar in the late 70's in California when he walked in with his entourage. He pulled out his guitar and played for about 20 minutes. It was an epiphony for me. To this day, it is a defining moment and really led me to become passionate about Flamenco. What I love about Pedro's playing is that it was like a bridge from old school to modern and from gitano to commercial, if that makes any sense. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I will ask some of my friends if they can help me to make it available to you. Not too tech savy unfortunately.
Thanks for mentioning him!

Pimsleur's Speak and Read Essential Spanish Volume 2. Lesson 5 now in it's 3rd year! There was an American women in Mexico .... not exactly Castilian, but sound and has helped me have the same conversation about my family over and over with various neighbours. Trouble is, once you have a few words, they think you know the language and talk back.

Agujetas el Viejo - Te quisiera preguntar (solea)

te quisiera preguntar
si cuando me ves te alegras
te sirviera de pesar

a voces te estoy llamando
y tú le dices a la gente
déjalo morir rabiando

sentí quejar
corriendo fui a la botica
la botiquita estaba cerrá
el boticario durmiendo
no se quiso alevantar

what u mean just the compas tracks ? thats sounds agonazing lol...
are you serious ? is the kind of thing they use for interrogation to brake people down and make em talk ..but atlist ritmo flamenco has jaleos and different patterns...solo compas would be worst cause is the same 2 patterns for 15 minutes per track..contra and straight..

but if u go through all of the 11 cds and use each of the example full tracks (with cante and dance) and add the Nuevo Cantaor one too in there u could make yourself the best flamenco compolation album out there...infact i just gave myself the idea ..the guitarring, singind and dancing is all top notch in Ritmo every single falseta and intro is perfect and would love to have it all transcribed for myself one day

thanks for the impressions mrMagenta..looks like i missjudged it unfairly cause of the name and appearence(cover looked a litlle latino to me...too much colour lol)..i will have to give it a chance tho..

Gesamtkunst French Polish. The finest you can get.

Well, it helps listening to music which builds up slowly. A French polish does the same. Time is an abstract thing when you do the same movement for hours and music which doesnt "stop" all the time helps you be in this time aspect.

I totally agree. Besides I find the playing used when accompanying cante to be more "real" Something I can identify with and something I can use myself.

sometimes too much guitar-virtuosity can be boring
that's why i'm only listening to nino miguel's recent you-tube videos at the moment!
no matter how many strings has on his guitar - that's the spirit i was looking for, if i'd live in huelva i'd listen him every day
by the way i discovered bruckner and mahler symphonies this year, this could be a great source of inspiration for us all, don't underestimate them

too much of anything can lead to burn out and boredom.... too much solo guitar, too much cante, too much classical symphonies, too much jazz, too much too much....

coupla monhts ago i borrowed about 25 cd's off someone i know, and listened to the whole lot really intensely, mostly stuff i didn't bother to get hold of in the late nineties and early noughties 'cos i got "new music burn out", but it's all stuff like montse cortes, nina pastori, mayte martin, estrella morente, potito, remedios amaya, duquende, arcangel, mostly people i had something of already, just not their 2nd or 3rd or 4th album! after 2-3 weeks of listening to 2-3 cd's a day i needed a break...

mostly i don't listen to anything, just the music in my head (it's ok, it's inside my head, the doctors told me it's ok as long as the voices are on the inside, it's when they are on the outside you have to start worrying!). I have so many cd's, i have spent so many hours listening to so much music my brain has become a sort of human ipod....

i listen to stuff in the car, so i make up compilations, mostly of whatever i'm trying to learn, and i just play it on a loop...

I recently bought a really great Cd by Juan Carlos Romero simply called 'Romero' and I would definately say it's worth a listen if you havent already. There's a great opening alegria, some really nice tangos stuff and a cool take on sevillanas as well as the obligatory bulerias too. It's pretty fully 'produced' as far as guitar sound goes and obviously in a very modern vein. The ending rumba has some nice sounding voices as well. clearly the guitar is fairly sublime throught but it's a pretty good mix for anyone who get's fed up of just cante Cds or just guitar Cds as both things are excellent on this CD. Mostly I just like the mood of the Cd as a whole its one that you can really listen to all the way through and view as great art as a whole!

hope this is of some interest to people!

Tomasillo

dude thats one of my favourites !!

..(that sound kind of grew on me..u know how the treblles seem a litlle thicker than previous flamenco guitar cds... its an unusual sound but i think it gives the illusion as if you are almost hearing it as he does and get a personal first person tour of his musical ideas..., the guitar feels closer to the microphone and bigger and the bases arent as typicaly "flamenco sound" punchy)

El mostador is so so flamenco, even with the modern sound so much aire...I dream of one day perhaps getting that kind of feel in mine...as far as rithm goes Juan Carlos is one of the main ones whos rithm i have tried to copy the most for my bulerias, from his original brakes to his standard rithm..

whever a student starts learning buleria..thats the track i play him to give him an example of what cant be explained in words..the kind of swing and feel we should be aiming for

Ole! i got myself in the mood to listen to it just by talking about it again lol

great taste amigo I cant wait for a new one from him...
