Pandora- On line radio

Y’all familiar with this site?:

http://www.pandora.com/

It’s a “personalized” on-line radio where you create different stations by typing in an artist name or song title, and it plays stuff that its algorithm or whatever deems to have similar qualities. I first discovered it a year and a half/two years ago, but forgot about it until just recently. At the time I recall there being a not-too-impressive selection of flamenco stuff, but I think they must have added to their database since then. At any rate, I’ve been listening to it quite a bit lately and have been enjoying it. Some of the names that they have in their system are Chacon, Morente, PDL, Tomatito, Gerardo Nunez, Fosforito, Jose Menese, Sabicas, Camaron, Manolo Sanlucar, Juenke, Argentina, Diego el Cigala, Chano Lobato… that’s off the top of my head right now. If you type in Fosforito or Menese, you tend to get more straight up cante and trad-style guitar. If you type in PDL or Tomatito you do get more real flamenco, but you also get lots of Gypsy Kings and some guitar-based, pan-latin “world music” type stuff. You can customize each station by giving a “thumbs –up” or “thumbs-down” to any track as it comes up, and it’s supposed to change what’s played to suit your preferences (though I’ve found that this feature is only sometimes effective).

Those of you who already have large CD collections probably won’t be overly impressed, but for me it’s provided a good way to hear a bunch of stuff that I don’t have, myself. You do have to create an account after the first few songs, but it is a free, no-strings affair.

Type in a name and see what you get………

I've had a Pandora account for some time, it's one of my favorite web radio sites. I like to record alot of what Pandora plays using Station Ripper (www.stationripper.com) and add it to my iPod. I've discovered alot of great music that way, but sadly my 8GB iPod doesn't have room for it all.

Should've added - Last FM is another really good radio too.

Nervertheless - I'll check it out. Thanks for the link

Hey, Val.

I’m not sure what you’re puzzled by. I was pointing out that, depending on what name you type in, the results you get can vary from other actual flamenco artists, to other definitely-not-flamenco artists. Type in Fosforito, and you’ll get a Fosforito track and then a bunch of other flamenco artists, mostly cante. If you type in PDL, it’ll play a Paco track followed by other actual flamenco artists, Tomatito, Gerardo, etc., but it’ll also start playing stuff that isn’t flamenco, world music and such. I guess the Pandora algorithm puts someone like Paco into a broader context, so the results of what it thinks is similar are more eclectic. Hope that’s more clear. Anyway, it all much simpler than my explanation, and will make since if you try it out.

Kovachian,

Thanks for the Last FM tip. Just signed up and it looks pretty good. At first glance it seems like they might have a better flamenco library than Pandora...

My friend just told me about it yesterday. It's incredible! I love it!! It's the best thing since sliced bread.

Give it try.

Un saludo, Errol

What I've always wondered is what was the best thing before sliced bread.

Pandora is cool but it's not always accurate. If you type in an artist, sometimes you'll get something completely different than that artists material. If that artist happend to play on a compilation album, you'll get other artists from that same album too.

Tom,

There was nothing better before sliced bread... Life was meaning less! We were just roaming the earth with no purpose..... Then God gave us sliced bread and now..... Pandora!!

Un saludo, Errol
