P-A-I/P-X-I Tresillo Advice Sought

Anyone know of any clear, and hopefully slow, illustrations of P-up, A-down, I-down and/or P-up, X-down, I-down tresillos? I’ve searched youtube without any luck, and none of the DVDs or books I have clearly explain these. I’ve been working through the Worms/Herrero and Granados technique books and I’ve hit a bit of a snag with these two rasgeuados. I understand that these movements are bound to be clumsy at first, but these two feel really awkward, and I don’t want to spend the next couple of months training my muscles to perform these tasks in a way that’s counterproductive, only to have to change it all later on. I guess I’m mostly concerned with what the non-active fingers are doing during the movement.

When I do P-A-I, M and X are extended out.

When I do P-X- I, M and A are lightly curled back into the palm.

Does this make sense? Do these sound right? Any advice would be of great help.

Thank you

Hi made a quic video, is this what you mean ?

video

heres a litlle slower just incase, cause i couldnt the the whole hand on the 1st vid
vid2

quote:

dont worry too much about what the other fingers do, they are irrelevant in this, as long as they are not in the way, whatever is most comfortable for you but dont feel that you have to have them a specific way, whatever feels natural and comfortable.

there is a very litlle flick but most of it is from the wrist , same motion as turning the door knob.

This here is florian,

florian drinks 4 cups of olive oil, 8 glasses of wine, 6 beers, 2 handels of vodka every day. he cut his ears off just so he could clean them out with his bowie knife. he also ate a box of razor blades, so he could crap them out on his nieghors face.

f*ckin spot on florian!

Thank you, sir! That's very generous of you to make this video. Yeah, this is the tresillo I'm talking about. I know it might be hard to explain, but would you be able to say how much of this movement is in the wrist and how much comes from flicking the fingers? When ever I see people doing this a normal speed it very much looks like it's "all in the wrist", but slowed down it seems like the flicking of the fingers is more prominent. Is that wrist movement coming from the momentum of finger flicking or is there a deliberate wrist rotation going on. Or am I over thinking this?

Thanks again!

well, just you try to rotate at slow speeds, it doesnt work!

at high speeds though, it helps to rotate. it will actually just come in time, if you try to rotate it will crap out on you, just relax and practice slow for a week or two, then you can try and speed it up, and keep it loose.

the flicking will happen on its own

No problem , wasent hard, guitar was in my lap allready and cam allready attached

there is a very litlle flick but most of it is from the wrist , same motion as turning the door knob.

the reason the flick is because it keeps the fingers extended and gives you a more even rounded sound, and it assures you hitt the string with the right part, make sure u strike with eachfinger evenly, otherwise it loses the rounddness , its most reason why finghers are extended for each strike rather than curled.

the eazyest way to practice it , practice it slowly with flick

flick thumb up. flick x down. flick i down. and repeat evenly, do this until it will naturaly speed up by itself and even up by itself, the rest sorts itself out.

Alright, brudes, thanks for the tips. I think this is pretty much what I was already doing, but it's good to confirm that I'm headed in the right direction. The only thing that's still bugging me is that unless I deliberately aim and flick the A finger, I end up hitting more on the side of the finger and nail rather than straight on. I figure this'll work itself out in time....

yes thats why u practice it slow with flick anf it will eventualy learn what it needs to do.

sounds like atm , when you not thinking about it, its not extended enough.

Ah, it's all coming clear. I wasn't totally sure what you meant about keeping the fingers extended, but I've got it now. The hitting on the side of the finger was coming from rolling the wrist down without flicking. I'll practice this for a week or two and maybe try to post a video to check and make sure I've got it right.

Thanks!

I'm going through Granados' books myself presently and was having some difficulty finding the most appropriate approach to these tresillo forms as well =]

Thanks florian! I'm amazed at how prolifically helpful you are here!
