Question about Repaired Guitars

I’d like to know what the luthiers think about guitars that have been repaired. I saw a Hill Almeria on eBay with a single crack on the sound board repaired with cleats. This guitar went for $600 USD—well below the usual cost. Is a guitar with a repair such as this worth anything at all; is it likely to be a problem in the future?

Glenn Canin is selling a blanca on eBay with a pretty major repair on the sound board and the cost is less than half what he would usually ask—btw it was owned by Jason McGuire. I’ve included the link in case anyone is interested; I won’t be buying it.

Its a difficult question to answer.

A good repair is a good repair and it doesnt have to influence in sound and sometimes not even in value. I tested a Reyes from 1962 a month ago. It has a big spruce splice in the soundboard 100% professionally made. The guitar sounds and plays very well and was sold for 8000,- euros. I cannot say how much it would be worth if it did not have this repair.

In general guitarists are very crack paranoid. In the violin world, cracks are common and much more accepted.
