here's a few versions, revised and improved by henrik, of the Alegrias in E so far.
for those of you with browsers other than IE:
i will post in gp5. click the link, click the link in the box that pops up, copy the url. open gp, paste into the address bar of the "open" thinger. if you need a gp 4 i'd be happy to post it
please offer commentary and revisions. Basic is what we are getting at:
Outlines the harmonies well (esp in falsetas, though i would advise excluding them unless they are really simple)
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
beginners don't have a lot of experience of which rasgueados to use where, especially when tackling a new palo, so if that could somehow show in the score it would be very helpful. i know gp5 is bad when it comes to right hand fingerings and that stroke directions make things a bit messy.. but on the other hand, you wouldn't need to show all strokes, only the ones that need extra notice, once for each type of occurence.
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
i think we ought to pin down a score format that we like. perhaps find some transcriptions that are clear and make our own template in finale from them. i can help out with this if you like. for instance, i could do without the note staff if i get to keep rhythmic notation, a classically trained person might feel differently, but more importantly i want clear right hand markings! which finger to use for a stroke and in which direction. that's essential to me as a beginner. this alegria. i could play it in a number of ways, but to make it sound like an alegria i would benefit from knowing how henrik uses his right hand, especially when doing this archetypical thing, even if there are many good alternatives to play the notes differently. so i get the fake book thing, with only skeleton melodies etc, but in flamenco there are often "skeleton rasgueados" for the fundamental compases, right?
another example of a personal preference in gp5 score even if i hold down a full chord, i prefer when only the ringing notes are written, for instance if i'm doing an i-finger upstroke my finger might only play the three first strings, but the score says, if interpreted literally: play like a tank! every string must move. i think that is unhelpful. especially when some rasgueados are best executed with the thumb resting on one of the strings you're supposed to play.
sound and video is a huge help too. but a well marked score takes care of many confusions that slip by.
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
here's how i'm trying to show what's going on with the right hand without actually marking each stroke using gp5. this is the first page of a transcription of a typical tangos. (i don't play it with so many i down strokes anymore)
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
it works if you do like hemeola writes in the first post. open the link from inside gp5. i think you might need gp5.2 for the gp5 files that hemeola posts. if you have a legal copy you can do the update automatically from the program :D
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
i agree ultimate combo is pdf + mp3. sometimes listening to gp5 playback gives the totally wrong idea because you don't get any swing etc. anyway.. if we get some cool person to actually record the mp3 i will offer to do graphical work with the score, that is, if we want a "foro flamenco" score format.
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
Hey! I have never been able to download GP3-4-5 etc.. format files from the foro. What is the secret? Please! Please! (What is the frequency Kenneth?) CIA ____! Only WMA and PDF---what gives?
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
Even with the clear illustrated instructions, I am unable to open the GP files. Why not just post a PDF version? There is no problem with download and open PDF file. It saves everyone a lot of frustration and time on so many file formats.
RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to larrygraham)
pardon me while i vent my frustration here.
i realize you probably just joined this conversation and it looks like it is your first post. doubtless this is hardly the way to welcome you, but i think your question merits a little consideration....which i have already posted about.
okay, read man. that scroll bar? use it, scroll up

RE: Alegrias in E realbook (in reply to HemeolaMan)
There are reasons I chose to do this in Gp5
firstly, It's universal. If you don't have gp4 or 5, its easily attainable... in a less than legal way, but simple nontheless.
gp5 exports pdf's and gp4's making it more versatile than any of the other software.
it takes less time entering tab than sibelius or finale
not everyone has sibelius or finale
and most importantly, If i post a section or a piece, and it is incorrect, people can easily make changes and submit it!!!
lets look at that again:
I am uploading gp5's and 4's because it is a program that is not only widely available and used by almost everyone IT IS ALSO EDITABLE
why is that important: my credentials are lacking. I am a flamenco acolyte. it is easier for someone to contribute something and they are more willing if all they have to do is edit a few bars and click upload. it is a familiar program to almost everyone and most people are comfortable using it
sibelius and finale dont read gp5 and only are available to very few. ptab doesnt read gp but gp reads ptabs.
gp5 talks well with sibelius, it exports actually usable musicxml files which i can pop into sibelius 4 with minimal editing and make a finished published copy worthy of an engravers approval.
the problem with pdfs....... sometimes they too damn big.
some people have 56k, pdfs take a while on a slomodem. gps take like 2 seconds
plus, then i'd have to make sure everyone's acrobat can read my file by EMBEDDING ALL THE FONTS IN POST SCRIPTS so someyoungguy from thailand can read it with his version of reader which doesn't have true type fonts
gp5 is pretty much not region specific in its distribution, it just comes with different languages already available. = no need to embed
plus if i upload a pdf, i have to go back in and re edit any changes someone submits in gp from what will probably be a text description
IN CONCLUSION:
I chose gp because its faster, easier, more universal, and plays back sound so you don't need a guitar to see if the score is correct.
sorry if that seemed harsh. it was. on a brighter note, welcome to the foro!!! if you'd like to contribute something, or perhaps discuss this more thoroughly on a person to person basis, please pm me or email me and i'd be happy to talk =)
