ORIGINAL: Estevan It's an interesting book, but he makes no pretense of objectivity, and has some rather harsh opinions Robin's book is very personal and you can see his personal taste leans towards the puro gitano style. I dont think it's a harsh criticism of Estrella's singing and he's certainly not alone in this opinion, there are many in Spain who say the same. Estrella has a sweet voice, not like the Gitana voice say of her contemporary Marina Heredía. They would often come together to the Eshavira and sing till the wee hours and it was interesting to compare their styles. Sadly Marina's recording contract obliged her to sing the poppy rumbas, tangos which most people know her by whereas Estrella had her father producing and much more control of what would be released. The record company had to be pressured to release her second album the popular folky Calle del Agua which they did in the end but with no promotion at all. The production of her first album was very pop and did very well because of that. The video posted was nice to see as I was there that night. Harold was doing the sound. It was amazing to see La Golandrina singing and, incredibly, dancing as well considering she's around 90, in fact when I told people later that I had seen her dance I was told by almost everyone that she was dead and I had to be mistaken. So here now is the proof. She walked into the cave aided by two sticks and was gently led to a seat, but once the juerga got going she took to the floor and danced. The other elderly lady dancing is La Salvaje, mother of La Porrona, there is a great photo of her with Bill Clinton hanging in La Porrona's cave. He looks scared stiff !!! Thanks for posting, Kate

Hi Kate, Thanks for your comments - I thought you'd have something to say about it. Yes, Estrella has a sweet voice, but it seemed a bit extreme to therefore dismiss everything she sings as "pop". I like Marina's voice too, and it's a pity that she has not yet been able (i.e. allowed) to record some more 'authentic' stuff. There are some bits of film on YouTube where she sings with her father that are very nice. Niña Pastori's another one with a great voice but too many pop songs. The whole question of who's responsible for the taste and style of recordings with a lot of 'outside' influence seems to be rather complicated. (Interestingly, Totton puts the blame for 'Calle del Aire' on the recording company! - I'm glad to know the real story). Quite apart from commercial pressure there's the matter of the performers' own preferences; a lot of gitano guitarists are big fans of bossa nova, Cuban music, etc. etc., and like to add electric bass etc. to pieces that don't need it (sez I), and who's to say what they should or shouldn't do? As for the film, you must have had a great time on the scene. La Golondrina is a fantastic character, dominates the procedings, and sings amazingly well for someone of her vintage. La Salvaje is terrific too - there's another scene where she sings and starts thrashing around on her chair as if she's about to blow up. Great stuff. A mark of authenticity is big somewhat scary old ladies singing and dancing. (From a guitarist's point of view some of the camera work is pretty annoying..... but the sound is great )
