I dont like this funk stuff and its more a Joke than flamenco.

BUT... nevertheless he is in compas. i am sure.

Yes Arash, at least he doesn't treat the compas as just a 3/4 time on which you can play any 3/4 tune.

He feels the 10, for example.

I suspect he's brought up with flamenco and just wanted to try something different for fun.

Yes, you can see it at the beginning when he plays the bulerias chords.....after that its crap though

I love bluegrass runs and pentatonic scales. Especially in buleria.

I think there is some limit for mixing other things to flamenco.
What Adam del Monte, Jason McGuire, Jeronimo, etc. do is the right way.
They mix some jazz elements here and there but its still 100% flamenco imo.

Sorry but this here in this video is too much.

p.s. Guitarbuddha......Bluegrass???

I actually prefer the funk guy over playing of these PdL falsetas:

Rather fusion in compas, than flamenco out of compas.

oh arash

come on

only after 30s he is out. i mean he can play the notes ( i cant ) but compas feeling? while the beginning is better it gets completely worse in the last 3rd. i dont wanted to put that guy down. i just like the attitude of that funk guy more. he respects compas, and has very good feeling for it. of course this funk thing is only a joke (to me also).

Thanks for posting this...

I can understand where this guy is coming from - although I'm not keen on the results.

I remember when I first caught the flamenco bug. I'd already been playing for 15 years - slowly perfecting my picking hand - wanting to be John Mclaughlin.

Then the flamenco bug took a big bite out of my ass. At first, I have to admit, I tried incorporating my existing picking technique into flamenco. However, for me it wasn't working.

I had all this technique - but I no longer wanted to play anything but flamenco.

Horrible position to find yourself in...

It was a humblling moment three years ago, when I threw away the pick and started from scratch - using flamenco technique. But as somenone who has tried with the pick, I have to say nothing beats the sound of pulgar! Your thumb nail is the perfect pick! Sure for the last few years I've sounded like a beginner again. But slowly -and I mean very slowly my technique is starting to take shape.

Now, you don't often succesfully see someone play flamenco with a pick - that's kind of what makes ToddK's playing so special.

What's important is the final result - however you do it - whatever technique you use doesn't matter - as long as it sounds good, who cares?

The difference with the guy on the video is that he's just dipping into the "the flamenco sound". To the untrained ear it probably sounds ok. But once your really into flamenco - it can be hard to stomach this kind of "experimentation".

The funk guy is a serious player and he plays some nice compas. But his single string playinlg is absolutely vile. Terrible terrible tone (no tone really), something truly awful happening with his left hand. He may get away with it on electric but it just sounds awful.

And the taste, he hasn't integrated any of his single string ideas with the harmony he plays. Fusion is blending this is clashing.

My favourite blending of Bluegrass and flamenco is Gerardo Nunez' Trafalgar (and yes I am being serious).

I remember switching from pick to fingers and believe me it isn't any easier if you are left handed playing right handed (which I am).

yes i was just doing some claping to his playing to see whats goin on and he is almost in compas.
Without backing track it is sometimes difficult to hear if one is in compas or not (specially in Bulerias)

BTW ....i also switched from pick (E-Guitar) to flamenco , so i know where you are coming from!
It was like flushing down the toilet everything i had learned with my right hand.

He is in. He does a half compas there. He is copying paco pretty well, probably some palmas would clear it up for the audience, but he knows what he is doing.

OOOPS, sorry scratch that Deniz was right. It was just playing in another window while I was reading, and I know a lot of those faletas. But I checked at 30 sec, and he is right. The guy is rushing like crazy and eating beats all over the place. Later on too he eats lots of beats. Too much rushing, he needs to slow down. He probably could play much better to palmas because he is "almost" in.

Nah, there is a difference between "almost" and "in" compas. I know those falsetas so it was easy to compensate for him, but when I started to try to groove with him...no. I think he was good most of the time, just rushing too much. Especially where there is space. The funk guy was real tight, but he had backing. Like I said if this guy had backing, I think he could do it better. But see Hassurbanipal's compas thread. One SHOULD be able to play tight w/o backing.

I think he just prooved you can do what ever you want with your flamenco contribution. I mean 'compas or no, he has a unique gift with his music, but then again I was only lurking....and I felt compelled to log in and say something. That means a lot. However bold he really touched on the idea of flamenco funk. I would go with different or expanded instrumentation, but still, God only knows the real dreams and aspirations he really has. And power to him! I can see the possibilities in that kind of direction......

It may not be Puro but it speaks to a definite and wide audience. That's what people are always looking for.
