Flamenco Chairs

so, I have been wondering, where the hell do i get one of those chairs?

you know what i mean, there's that chair with the 2 rungs and its straight backed and tall, with the brown woven seat... they're in just about every pic or video you've ever seen... I dont think i've ever seen pdl without one....

SECONDLY... what kind of zapatos are you guitaristas sportin???? Personally I have no idea what the approved official footwear of flamenco guitarists is....

I will post a pic of what i've been using.

but first, the chairs!

Those chairs look great and absolutely kill your lower back!!!!

The dance school where I accompany and nearly every peña flamenca in Spain has these chairs. If you dont get up every now and again, you cant move afterwards. Your curvy spine does not fit against a completely flat upright.

PDL has a 4 legged leather stool now which goes on tour with him now.

pdls 'stage shoes' are usually black cuban heeled ankle boots.. i noticed this when trying to following his foot compas!
like these
check out jbashoruns pics on this thread for proof http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=78953&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1
seems daniel mendez is wearing them too although Alain Perez is asserting his independence with brown brogues!!
of course the dancers wear cuban heels too dont they..

RE: Flamenco Chairs (in reply to HemeolaMan

The height of the chair is a personal preference. I agree though, chairs of different heights can seem to influence the angle I use when playing. When I brought this up at another forum, it was said that the height of the chair should create a 90 degree angle at your knee when you sit in it. So when sitting, if you measure from the floor to the bottom of your thigh when your knee is exactly 90degree, then that is theoretically your optimum chair height. I noticed when I tried this however, that I prefer chairs that create a more acute angle than 90degree/shorter chair. Here's a thread that might be helpful, and you'll notice Suvius uploaded some plans for a 'guitar chair' that are pretty cool.

Val--- the chains are a part of whats called a concho strap. these boots are somewhat commercially based on gauchos.... south american cowboys. so the chains are just for grinns

shroomy.. i agree an acute angle is what i enjoy most. in the practice rooms at school i have a certain chiar that i look for, thats just low enough to be comfortable, if i have a chair thats too high, i can't play as well and my tone goes to ****----------> maybe if i were better that wouldnt matter so much!!!

I think you could get it done in about a day, or maybe a day and a half depending on alcohol intake during the procedure.

Hi HemeolaMan,

Those chairs look really cool. I have always liked tall ladder back chairs. I acquired an Early American ladder back chair about 50 or 60 years ago that I still use. It is in excellent condition and very comfortable to sit in [with a nice thick cushion] while playing the guitar.

The back is 27" high above the seat and it has four horizontal flat slats that "ladder" up the back. The woven seat is 18" off the floor.

Unless you want absolute "authenticity", you could check one of these out at a fine furniture store. Beware of flimsy imitations!

Good luck,

Doog

LOL!!!
Hi. This discussion is cracking me up.

HemeolaMan, I see you are in the Chicago area. I am sure you can find a good straight back chair at Salvation Army. I recommend the one off of Halsted near Pickens-Kane.

Pretty soon we will need those snow chains.

I was in Spain in July, and many guitarists wore slender loafers with elongated toes. I have this type of footwear in a short boot. Here's the pic. Available at Aldo shoes, but cost a fraction of the price in Spain. BTW, you have to match the shirt. Black shirt, black shoes; white shirt, white shoes.
It really seemed to be the "thing". LOL.

Here's my son demo'ing our guitar playing chair, it will accomodate multiple
players and singers at the same time. You can also put, drinks, snacks, music
within easy reach. It requires virtually no maintenance, and it came built-in
to the house.

Regards,
Jeff

Sometimes my kids make me go practice on the stairs because they are occupying every other room in the house and my practice is too noisy. I feel like I'm being made to sit on the 'naughty step'.

Acctualy this is funny, i left my last pair of good black shoes at some festival outside Adelaide when i played there, packed everything but the shoes.

So the other night i was wearing my light cream shoes witch happen to have a hole in them at the stiching from always bending my foot when i play for classes lol I am from the streets, i had to keep it real, i had to Represent !I keep forgheting about my shoes until the next time i need em , and when i do realize its normally 2 hours before a gig when i am getting dressed and its too late to do anything about it.

JM hard a red scarf around his neck as you would expect every MAESTRO to wear in the midlle of summer :-)

Eliot Fisk a pink shirt

dont tell me about Class !

My two year old daughter just walks up, puts her hand on the strings, and
says "STOP" :) Hard to argue with a two year old. They just reply with "NO"

LOL! Hemeolo, with those bototos of yours there's only one kind of suitable 'chair'... could be awkward with the guitar, though...
