Luthier 20 basses, but they don't last long. I just stick with good old EJ45 basses that last forever. I use LaBella 820B trebles on both my DeVoe's.

If you want ultra clear, bright trebles use Alliance. Great sound, but too thin and stiff for me.

I won't get the Alliance trebles - they sound similar to H'bach Goldins (which I disliked) based on your description.

Yes they are like thin wire that cuts into my fingers, but god they sound great for about five days!

from the man himself:

"...I like Luthier #20 basses and D'Addario J45 trebles. La Bella flamenco stirngs with the black trebles are good also.

Lester "

I have a DeVoe negra and I have a couple of suggestions.

If you want a brighter, more crisp sound, consider trying a set of Aquila Alabastro strings. They really ring! I use them on my blancas.

I wanted a deeper more mellow sound with my DV negra and I am using La Bell 850s [Golden Nylon Trebles/Golden Alloy Basses. I really like these strings!

I have never tried Aquila strings, but you have peaked my interest Doog. I wonder if anyone else has any experience with Aquila

Neal,

Just stick with the 20 bases. The La Bella basses suck on my DeVoe's as well. In fact I think they pretty much suck. Just buy a bunch of 20 bass sets from Stringsbymail.com. The trebles will last forever. After months, I change the black trebles and don't hear any differance.

Try Savarez basses at various tensions against the La Bella trebles you like. On one guitar I use la bella on the trebs and Luthier on the bass. They have luthier 30 and 40 which might work for you too. It might be all about the tension.

Good luck.

Since my last post, I have given the Aquila Alabastro strings a try, and consider them my favorite strings to date. They sound great and have been on my guitar for almost a month now, but they still sound great. They feel a little different. Their texture doesn't feel as 'glossy' as regular strings, and the treble diameter is a little wider than what I normally like, but the sound more than makes up for it. Just thought I would share.

Hi Neaf,

I've e-mailed you privately and asked you question about your post (a week ago).
Could you reply?
Thanks
Dave
