Its a boy! (but already knew that..)

Hi folks
Haven't been around for a few weeks as my wife gave birth to a baby boy on 11th Feb.

Mother & baby doing fine, and life is suddenly much more busy!

I am sure I will find the time for some guitar practice in a few years or so

Right On Jon!
I reckoned that's why you'd been off the Forum recently. Glad all's well.
Yeah, my wife went for an amneo (sp) so we knew in advance as well.
Is this your first?
With regards to practising, when I was at Rafael's house, we started playing some stuff and heard his baby girl crying from the next room where she was presumably asleep.
I said, "Oh sorry, we maybe better keep the noise down a bit."
He laughed and opened the door a bit and said "It's OK, she was just crying because the door was shut. She likes to hear me practise!"
Sure enough, a few bars of Tangos and she was quiet again!
So there you go!

cheers

Ron

My first Ron, my wife's second. We alread have Jake (he's ten) but this is my first experience of babies. Phew, talk about hard work...

Whats this about Rafael, Ron? Are you talking about Riqueni, and is this a recent thing? For some reason I thought you were entirely self taught, but now I see why your material sounds so authentic and 'correct'. Just before baby was born I started catching up with the forum's recordings - your tangos is great, very cool (actually, the whole colaboration is great.)

I need to talk to you about that Faustino book - I'll try and find the thread..
Cheers

Hi Jon,
I meant the Rafael in Oxford.
I am really just self taught from records and cornering various visiting guitarist on tour and making them show me something. LOL!
I hadn't played guitar in a long time, so when I took it up again I decided to consult a professional to tell me if my technique and understanding was more or less correct or just rubbish. So I phoned him up and arranged to go down to Oxford for a couple of days.
I'd made up my mind that if he told me it was crap then I was just going to forget about playing altogether and take up pressing wild flowers instead LOL!
Anyway he said my technique was OK but very rusty and needed a lot of practise, but that I was on the right track, so that gave me a lot of encouragement.
He also helped me with my understanding of flamenco composition and phrasing.
I don't know about sounding authentic or correct though.
Basically I tend to go for falsetas that have a particular sound that I like even though they are not too difficult technically.
I like that sound that the genuine players have...just the little things like the way they will slur a note or the way they syncopate a rasgueado, so I like working on that rather than the technically difficult stuff.
By the way Dave (Billyboy) who posts here has had lessons from the great Riqueni!

cheers

Jon,

Congratulations as well! As of a couple of weeks ago, I am a new grandpa. The best part about being a grandfather is I get to send him home!

Don’t let that new recording equipment set too long!

congratulations Jon.

Mother and son are doing fine, good, but...........
How is father doing?

When my wife was expecting my son, 12 years now, we have got a lot of tips and do's
from the family.
One of them was, after 3 month pregnancy(right spelling?) you have to have the baby room finished after 7 month of pregnancy.
My idea was, pffffffff two month to go then.

After more than 6 month I had to go to South Korea, for three weeks.

My son is born after 7 month pregnancy, I was just back (earlyer then planned) 1 and a half week.
Murphy is also here........

Enjoy your son and much health for you and your family.

Congatulations John, Paco would be an original name maybe, Picado as a middle name?
My one to one lesson with the great Riqueni lasted approximately 30 seconds, the story was this, I went to the flamenco fest in Cordoba in 95, and enrolled on the Enrique de Melchor Cante accompanying class, the whole trip ended up a disaster. Enrique’s class was disorganised to say the least, it was supposed to be a class to learn accompanying, but the singer only turned up one day, and he spent most of that day in the bar, along with senior Melchor, the only time during the whole course he felt like teaching, he would just go through the odd falaseta from one of his albums, you know the type of lesson, pinky on fret 4, ring finger on fret 3, second string etc.In Spanish as well, can you believe the cheek, I only speak Lancashire “ey up”, “Ecky thump” etc, I choose the Melchor course over Riqueni thinking Cante is something I should learn, but as it happened, my course was jam packed, where Riqueni’s only had a handful of students. I used to play one of his Garrotin pieces, so I played him that, he kept stopping me every second note, saying your fingering is wrong, or words to that effect, as he doesn’t speak English, and I have no Spanish, Then to top it all, I got a liver infection, spent two day sweating in my hotel room. Cordoba was the hottest place on earth that day, 48 % or something. Then as the certificates were handed out at the end, I was missed out as there was someone else with the exact same name as mine, on the same course. I ended up getting the next flight back home which cost me about £250.
Cheers

Phew - what a run of bad luck. Still, you do a pretty frightening Riqueni rendition, Dave, so the 30m sec lesson obviously paid off! That piece you posted must have taken months and months to get down.
Cheers

Thanks Jon, just spent the last couple of months learning Peurto Cameronero (Buleria), which I will post when I feel comfortable playing along to Rons FM.
Cheers

Well I'm looking forward to that! Can't imagine that solo flamenco gets much more difficult than a Riqueni buleria.

Been doing a lot of Bulerias study myself, also with Rons fabulous FM. Sure does iron out the creases, eh? I hope to have something to post in the not too distant future, when I have my hands on a guitar as opposed to a pack of nappies

Hope you are investing in some better recording gear, Dave. I only say that because your playing deserves it.

Thanks Jon,
I still use the £5 mic, and £10 sound card, basically I'm scarred of messing inside my computer with new sound cards, I have visions of burning the midnight oil trying to make it all work, sooner spend time playing, but now you have mentioned it I will make an effort to buy a new mic, and phantom power, or pre amp, don't really know the differance. When I record without any effects, it doesent sound too bad, but as soon as I try an add reverb and stuff, the sound quality takes a nose dive. Looking at an Audigy SoundBlaster sound card about £60 ?.
Thanks
Dave

Well I have to say you are right to be cautious, it CAN be a real pain sorting things out and getting a stable system. Some people are very lucky and it all seems to work, but I've spent many long hours doing what you describe above, when I have upgraded or changed something.

Basically, condenser mics need some kind of power supply. There are some that simply take batteries (I'm selling one if you are interested, which would be a step up from what you've got - see my post elsewhere re. gear for sale), or they draw the power they need from an external source, such as a pre amp or mixing desk.

For the best quality recording, you will need a pre-amp of some sort anyway, in order to get enough signal from the mic to be recorded via the soundcard line in. You could go via the soundcard mic input, which has its own preamp built in (and therefore you wouldn't need to buy one), but the sound quality of these is invariably crap so no-one uses them.

Well, OK, but what about everything else? If you are still using a five quid mic, and you don't have a preamp, you probably won't hear much difference from what you record now, as the mic is probably the main source of noise and general poor sound quality.

The trouble is, you have to consider EVERYTHING in the signal path, and so it makes sense to work out what your budget is, and then choose mic + pre-amp + soundcard that are all in the same class.

Dave,

If you have not done so, you can download an article that Tom W and I wrote on "Recording the Flamenco Guitar". You can find it under "Playing", "Recording Advice"
