I saw the Maestro last night.1 votes

PdL was magnificent. To my surprise he played his trusty Conde negra for the entire show. Not sure if it's the one he's been banging on all these years but if it was, he's had the top refinished.

Bassist Alain Perez Rodriguez was very good. Waiting for him to get his visa was a good thing. The entire band was tight and looked really comfortable with each other but more importantly, they looked like they were just having a good time.

When I think of PdL I think of blazing picado but last night watching him I realized that this man has a very very good tremolo. I never really noticed just how good.

Does anyone know how he can play picado the way he does? My fingers are almost straight when doing picado but his hand is almost like a claw with fingers bend. Is he playing mainly tirando?

If your planing to see him or already have tickets, your in for a treat.

Yes! I do consider myself a very lucky b@$t@rd. Last night I was in the presents of greatness. Very few people get the opportunity to see their hero's.

Congrat's on the wedding. I knew it was on V-day and figured you were on a honeymoon since you hadn't posted. So are you now Miguel de Kim?

I read your last post but I still don't quite understand how Paco's picado technique is achieved?

Im Happy for you El Z.
Paco and just about every flamenco guitarplayer in the world stays as far away from sweden as they possibly can...I will never understand why. Paco...Gerardo ..vicente...
tomatito...etc would be playing for a full house every night.

Your very lucky!!!

Hola Henrik,

Texas is much like Sweden. We don't have many "big" name flamencos come by that often. We have plenty of well known classical guitars that come here but no flamencos.

Believe me, aside from flamenco, Texas is nothing like Sweden - $10-$15 for a beer in Stockholm, minumum. No Billy Bob's or chicken fried steak Airport is another country from the city and costs a ransom in cab fares. Big palace though.

I was speaking stricly in terms of flamenco. No chicken fried steak in Sweden! Man that's tough but I'm sure Sweden has many treasures that we don't have here in Texas

Happy for you Tom, Wish I had been there. And cool he played the Conde. I know how much you like that guitar. (Lets do a copy. you a lefty, and me a righty)
Don´t play the picado with straight fingers, it´s only for weirdoes.

Well, about Sweden, there are other pleasures than the tall blondies. They´ve got some hardcore mosquitoes, and some hardcore outdoor parties, with mosquitoes and HB (homeburnt or hembränt)

You should go there for a vacation. You know, that´s where Lee Hazlewood went when he got tired of Texas.

Glad you finally made it to the foro Anders. Welcome my friend. Did Lee Hazlewood ever call Texas home? I'm not sure. I think other than Sweden he also may have lived in London, Paris, Germany, Helsinki, Spain, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Florida. I could be wrong though. This is just what I've heard.

Some day I'll get to Sweden as well as Spain for vacations. I'm trying very hard to find a way to get to Siguenza in August to study with Jose Romanillos. How far are you from here? I think I would have the weekends off and would like to meet up with you if possible.

Welcome again to the foro.

Now that would be fun, what's the cost for his luthier course? I would love to go myself.

Need any help on accomodation in the UK for your stop-over? LHA is the cheapest destination from the USA usually. You can get to Spain pretty cheap from here e.g. Jerez is $160 return (at current forex) and even in August it can be cheap if you leave really early in the morning.

I was thinking of cruising down in the convertible in the Summer Which is pretty daft as Romanillos is based in the UK

It would be good if you could go Simon. We could pal around and build a guitar while we're at it.

According to the info Jose's son Liam sent me, the cost is £1,300. £500 for a non-participating guest and a non-refundable £200 deposit per person. Full payment due 8 weeks prior to arrival. Room and board is provided.

Here's the URL to the site www.guitarmakingcourses.com

Bring one's own materials and tools, I see. I have some nice rosewood and Engelmann Spruce for a negra.

Not sure about this one though...

it is also recommended that certain parts of the guitar be brought already prepared

Any idea what parts? Probably the neck with stacked heel and glued up headstock scarf with veneer and tuner slots?

We could just about build a guitar between us in two weeks (with little finishing) but who gets to keep it Might be better to start one each.

You want to take another 4-5 days, drive down from England, through France and back? There is a lot to see and eat on the way. Won't cost you much more. Anyone else on for this, I have a back seat?

Hi Romanillos guys, I don´t know where Siguenza is. I´m in a small (very beautifull) village just outside Granada. Feel free to come, But August is... hot.... very hot .... sweaty, hardcore hot.

I believe we'll be building a replica of one of his classicals and one of the prefabricated parts is the neck but I think it's a V joint style. I haven't done one of these yet.

Accordiing to the info I received the exact items and materials we'll need to bring will be disclosed upon receipt of the deposit.

You mean fly down to London and cruise to and fro Spain in the convertable? Now your talking man. This would be a hell of a trip. I'll keep in touch with you about it.

Sigüenza is in the province of Guadalajara, a provins mostly known for its farming, and because it´s got the highest percentage of bachelors in Spain, so you´ll be well concentrated on building guitars I think. Well Madrid isn´t far away, so you can visit your favorite workshops and se some very nice flamenco shows.

Yep:

Paco is in D.C. tonight... we have our tickets, and apparently Paco has his band intact, so.. things should be perfect. We get to listen to him and he gets paid!

what could be better?

Hi Everybody!!
I got the chance to see him last thursday 19 in Miami, very nice show, though rather short from what I was used to when he shows here in Mexico City.
Had great seats, 2° row at the center of the theatre, so I had a very clear and close view all the time.
Also got the chance to talk with members of the band, Alain, the Flutist -which whom I don't remember his name- and also had the chance to have a long talk with Juan d' Anyelica, who recorded "Dengue" in Cositas Buenas and whom I had'nt seen since many years ago.

Ah! yes, he did played his old trusty Conde. The last time I saw him in 2000, he used the same guitar, so all gosips where wrong about using any other guitar, also my impresion is that it is the same as the "scared one" he had been using since long time ago, just match the sides of "Light and Shade", and "Francisco Sanchez", DVD's and you will note the wood figure is the same, one with new finish and brighter, but neverthe less same figure.

Saludos a Todos
Jerzy
