do - re - mi - fa - sol - la - si - do (in fact we learned this as do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) =
c - d - e - f - g - a - b - c

it's quite simple, you can learn this by singing it a lot back and forward, making little rhymes etc.

So, is "do" ALWAYS C?

No, it is the tonic of the scale i.e the start. At least it was in my piano lessons and I think it is spelt doh ray me far so lar tee doh.

guitar transcriptions are written in "relative", not "absolute", meaning even if you put the capo anywhere, the note "e" on the bass string will be written as "e" and the tab will show you e string, zero fret or 12th...so when it comes to guitar tabs, yes, "do" will always be "c" and the "do" chord will mean the c chord shape, even if in absolute terms the notes are different...
i would think this can cause a bit of a mess when playing with musicians playing other types of instruments :)

Not exactly. You have to take into acount lower case means minor chords, upper case major chords. The way you wrote, all are major chords. You can do the same, a, G, F, E, E7, a, etc. Or I prefer Am, G, F, E etc. So La is A major, la is A minor.

Another thing in addition to your translation of do re mi, are the in between notes. Mi Bemol is "Eb" or E flat. Fa sustonido is F#, etc. That will be important too.

Ricardo, Thanks. This is really helpful. How do you know all this?

Well, I studied music, I understand chord chart MO's a la jazz and pop music, and I also just so happen to know how to play some Tanguillos.

Intersting point. That spelling just sounds really British to me. In flamenco, the music is refering to Guitar so, do re mi fa sol la si do is the way, and yeah always c d e f g a b c. So confusing using both terms when you have a "Si" chord, "Do you mean C chord or Si chord?" "Si señor!". It is funny because they are one fret apart.

Anyway, it does not work so well for "tonic of the scale" no matter what note, because it is specifically a MAJOR scale and there are different types of scales. For example, flamenco has Phrygian tonic, like Solea is described mi fa sol la si do re mi. If "do" had to be tonic, you would find nerdy flamenco's describing solea as: do re bemol mi bemol fa sol la bemol si bemol. And of course they don't!

val, where did you find letras with chords? that's what i've been looking for but i haven't found much. when my friend has a letra she sings but doesn't know the chords to, i have to find the melody on a recording and take it out by ear.. always takes a lot of searching and guessing, also i'm a beginner and not sure that i'm doing it right all the time.
