Paella, a bit on the bland side.

I went to a Spanish restaurant at the weekend, and had some Paella. First time I’ve had the proper stuff. I must say it was a bit on the bland side, and that’s being kind, in fact it was tasteless, except for a slight fishy taste. I find most Spanish food bland and tasteless, but maybe I just had a bad one.

The worst Paella I ever had was in Valencia, where it originated. Here in Boston we have a Spaniard who calls himself Paella King. He's paella is wonderful. I have heard that my friend Charlie Vega makes a damn fine Paella too.
Spanish food is at it's best when it's seafood in my opinion. Last time I was in Granada I was hanging out with my friend Zaira Fisk, wife of my friend Eliot Fisk. Eliot was on tour in Italy at the time. Anyhow she took me and my friend's to a neighborhood restaurant in el Albicin that served up the best calamari fritas I have ever had. All the seafood was first rate. Good tinto as well. Ok now I'm dying to get back.

Now I am hungry. I prefer seafood when I am within an hour of it where it was caught.

Girls and boys, teach me

Is "bland" meaning a lack of taste?

Yeah Ed,
Bland means that it doesn't have much flavour or taste, say like boiled white fish or something.
Dave finds Paella bland 'cos he's used to 10 pints and an extra hot vindaloo on a Friday night.

cheers

Don't know Dave, but I reckon it must be "fuegoculos" or something! LOL!
