flamenco guitar training in Spain - ...

I would like to visit Spain for several weeks in Spring or Summer 2008 to take in flamenco first hand, and to further my study of the flamenco guitar. I would classify myself as "intermediate-advanced" level (grade 4) in flamenco guitar. Opportunities for accompaniement is one of my objectives, the other objectives are to immerse myself in flamenco, Spanish culture, and practice Spanish language skills.

My question is this: Can anyone recommend a good instructor or school setting in Jerez del a Frontera/Moron, Malaga, Cadiz, Sevilla, possibly Madrid? I found several instructors/schools on the internet in which I am uncertain, however, recommendations from members here would be far more valuable to me. I would contemplate going during the annual festival in Sevilla. Affordable accomodations is also a consideration. Thanks.

Larry

Hi Larry,

I am in Granada which you dont mention but is a good place for flamenco and more affordable and beautiful than Madrid. Quite a few forum members have had classes here with Emilio Maya, who now has his own school and offers classes to accompany cante. Adam (Ramparts) was here recently, Simon has had classes with Emilio so ask them for some feedback if you are interested. I am biased as we recorded Emilo's CD Temple in our studio and he is a good friend. When Ed Fisher stays in Granada he rents out a room in the house of the flamenco singer Jaime Heredía, father of Marina Heredía who lives next door. It's not luxury accomodation and does not suit everyone but it does mean you are in the middle of flamenco life, and its right next door to the Peña Platería.

Other foro members in Spain are Estela in Jerez who may be able to recommend someone there, she also spent many years in Moron and knows the scene in Sevilla. And Sean in Cadiz who also records flamenco artists. Anders the guitar maker just moved to Huelva. They have a great festival there by the sounds of it from his last post.

Hopefully other members will post some recomendations.

Suerte
Kate

I went to the Taller Flamenco school in Sevilla in 05' & 06'. It was a great experience and I stayed with different families for housing given by the school. Also, once a week we met with all the other students at a cafe and talked about flamenco and such. Some of us even went out to see some flamenco together and just went out around the city.

So if you go there I'd certainly check it out.
