RE: Does anyone of you play i a picado ? (in reply to Nino_S)
Yes I use it sometimes. Sometimes its much faster and mre logical to use that instead of ia. For example at some changes from arpegio to picado. But I use (a m i) picado more often.
I think if you are fast enough, you dont need a m i. But if you have the control to perform it and play faster than with your im and with more control. Than its a good idea to do that. And beside of that your other technics become better, too coz you allways use a m i. Just usually not as picado...
One of my friends play i a enourmous fast. Faster than i m. An he has very good control. If you think about that i a is more logical cot i and a´s length is more similar then m i. So I think in all ways, its a good choich to train it.
I never saw Sabicas doing it that way. And we all know, manitas de plata didnt accepted the compas rules,.. so,.. if he cant play in compas.. I would not look at his technics to try to learn anything from him.

In that case is wise to do it.
Somewhere I've read that Serranitoo plays ami.
well, I've tried few times to played ia but mine brain is trained to play im :) With practise of course it can be trained the both ways... As well you can play tremolo instead of piami - pmami...

Yes, but I like to use different variations of picado for all the different phrasing possible, it's more like an arsenal that you aquire and do naturally when needed. P-I-M-A-X, all four fingers and thumb are quite useful in all the possible ways needed. Collect techniques, they are all good!

It is good to practice all. However since the A finger is so much closer to the bridge the sound blend with I on a single string with rest stroke can be uneven.

Yes! and it's that element of phrasing that would make you choose whatever combination or repetition of techniques. I find that I prefer it that way, because I may have a triplet and say four eighth notes, that requires two different techniques for me, or I just get wrought and have to count it out. This way I would play a-m-i and x-a-m-i and keeping compas is a whole lot easier. True they are seperate and I have to use them, but that is the element of practice that makes for good music. After a while it comes with fluency.

Hi gato, one thing that I think strengthens the rhythmicality and control of my arps and gives me a little more 'swing' is this. I play thumb rest strokes with the cascada rhythm (you know the one that goes 'i dont like carrots i like tomatoes' which is used in african and cuban music) and do all my arps ( ima, ami, imam, iama, imia) on the trebles. It is great. I dont use my pinkie except for rasg.
The ultimate arp workouts (for my own personal musical satisfaction)can be found in Bachs solo violin sonatas and partitas. In particular the G minor presto is great fun to play por buleria.
Although I do do three finger work in some scalar passages I work more on two fingers because it is more reliable for improvisation as there are only two fingers to think about ( or preferably not to think about ).

Cool, I choose what ever technique in order of accent and syncopation, that works for me. We are all unique. I use my pinky for ras. Oh well, there is the matter of making it all work out right. I mean you don't always end up in the same place, picado is different for everyone, and it's a matter of preferance. Sounds good.....
