New Label

Hi, I would like to design and make a new label for my guitars and would appreciate any ideas including software. Drawing and art are not my strong points, but I will try anything that will help me out.
Thanks, Harry.

That's almost impossible to reply to.
The maker's label has to be a very personal thing and once it's made it's there more or less for good (OK I know it can evolve but not radically change)
It's a bit obvious to say but you should make a point of checking out all the labels you can find and making a list of what you like, fancy to simple being the two poles.
After that, make something up and you'd get a better critique if you could post something for comment.

harry98,

I used Adobe Illustrator for mine and some nice stiffer paper. You can go to Barnes and Noble and buy one of the Clipart books by Dover. I believe they have one on Borders and Frames. The rest is taken from your ideas and imagination.

The more simple such a label looks the more beautiful is it.
In my opinion.

Tom, did you print the label yourself using an ink printer or did you go to a print shop with your Adobe file? I'm asking since my son is gluing on the back on his first guitar in a day or two and we need to produce a label soon.

Per,

I use MS Publisher to make labels. If you print it on an inkjet type printer make sure to use a high quality acid free paper and you'll need to spray it with fixative after it's printed to make it water proof. If you can get access to a color laser printer that would be much better.

I print them myself on my HP Deskjet 5440. Just a simple printer. Nothing fancy. Just use a high quality paper and adjust your printer settings accordingly.

If using a deskjet (as Tom says), don't forget to apply fixative (as John says). Inkjet printings are NOT waterfast, and there's nothing worse than spending ages on designing a fancy label and then getting it ruined when drips of water from bending the binding fall through the soundhole.

You know, that's a good point. I haven't used any type of fixative on any of my labels. I just be sure to cover the label when working. Usually I have some newspaper or towel stuff in the soundhole.

Thank you guys! We've made a trial gluing on scrap and it looks fine. The ink is not bleeding so tomorrow the back will be glued on the guitar. My son son is a bluesman, 10 years and NOT a flamenco, and the guitar is a ladder braced steelstring guitar, but anyway. Guitarmakers are related in some way or another. Let's see if I can convert him to the right path...

Yes, it's all good. All one family. Just different interests. I'm even getting into Ukulele construction but with the more modern Kasha bracing scheme.
