What should I play?? UPDATE

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know, I played at the garden party on Saturday afternoon/evening and the feedback I got from the guests was all good.
Obviously I wasn't quite as happy with it. I'm my worst critic.

The biggest problem was the noise. As frhout suggested in my original post I needed to be amped up. Peoples chatter and aeroplanes passing and cars out on the road made it almost impossible for me and my cajon playing friend to hear each other.

The second problem was drunken friends/guests wanting to join in. There were alot of musical instruments at the house. It would have been fine if they had just been slightly less drunk but with the already noisy conditions, an extra drunk girl hitting a bongo drum completely out of time pushed me to the brink of going crazy.

As far as Flamenco, I played a Rumba and a Solea a bit later on and a few Gerardo Nunez falsetas/pieces from his encuentro book. I mixed that in with some of my own acoustic jams and a few well known favourites that people were requesting. Although I didn't think it went that well. Lots of guys after were saying I did well and it was a real nice vibe.

If I learnt anything, it was GET AMPED (I knew this before anyway) and Be an **** and don't let it turn into a free for all jam session (which it kind of did for a bit) but hey we all had fun.

I also feel like I've had a bit of a confidence boost. so thats good. Alot of my friends were very interested in the technical side of flamenco and I enjoyed explaining a few bits to them.

Anyways, Thanks for your help guys. Bring on the next gig.

Stu

Hello Manzmann

Glad that you did it and got satisfaction. I have decided not to do this anymore for a couple of reasons. First is of course the noise, for a party, chatting is almost always more interesting than flamenco music (when you mention the word flamenco, I guess most would understand flamingo, you would then have to explain further that flamingo is actually a sort of bird) that most can't even sing or hum along. Secondly, I found it very challenging with or without an amp, playing before a lot of people as against playing alone at home, the lack of strength and accuracy is very punishing, for ourselves, who are a lot more demanding than others who just listen to it. Your level must be good if you can manage the Nunez pieces as none of them is easy. I give myself time to retrain my fingers to see if I can go anywhere near Nunez's. All the best and keep up the good work.

Stu,
parties are parties and people will do what they will, you had alot of time in preparation, and the results are much different than a concert and that is what you have to expect. You got them excited enough that they wanted to join you, and that is great! They were interrested in the flamenco from the great job you did with the presentation, eaven though there were distractions. And most of all everyone had fun and they liked it. I couldn't imagine spending a better time with alot of people with my music in a personal setting and up close in such a way like that. Prepare for the next......

Could you post your tracklist? I have been asked to play explicitely without amp on a meeting, but for 7 or 8 hours??! Isnt this unusual?

I dont really have an idea what to play. Especially without repeating myself. I could play improvisations on Rumbas for very long time, but then i would have to take another guitarist with me.

i was wrong its not 7 hours. The party is planned to last that long (which is unusual too, no?).

I dont want to play rumbas. The rumbas i like, i cant play them (Tomatito, Jesus).
