Ron's Flamenco Master

Jim I really admirer your playing. Your playing flows nicely. That Hill negra in my opinion is what a good negra is supposed to sound like. I must have one.

Jim,
I can't get it to play. I can see the little cursor move along, but no hay sonido.
I think it's in Quicktime? Maybe I need an upgrade or something?
I tried the "Save as Target" trick but still no joy.
Anyone else having the same problem?

Yeah, it's in Quicktime, you can download it from Apple's website.

Hi Ron,
I just sent down the wav file, it's only a home practice recording but the first time I used Flamenco Master as a compas backing and I enjoyed doing it.
I believe it has been placed on the site with quicktime, I had the same problem a while back and the free download from Mac sorted it.

Thanks Tom, I read an article on Stephen Hill about 5 years ago and everything he said just sounded right, low harmonic bars to boost treble response etc. I have a great Montero y Bellido from 1968 and this guitar has this feature and marvellous treble.
So I put in my order for the negra. She's a fantastic guitar with big sound and the instrument is full of energy and it's vibrant with no 'dead' areas. Initially I sent her back to have changes made to the action, I don't like thick ebony fingerboards and Stephen reduced it righ down to about 4mm. As Simon commented, the sound is very 'warn' yet still with masses of flamenco edge and bite.
I keep telling people about SH, but everyone says 'who he?'
Ron had a try on my negra and liked her very much.
I placed an order for a blanca about 18 months ago and she should be here some time next week. Incidentally, I acquired a Conde Esteso A26 last week, so it will be great to compare, I'll keep you posted. I antisipate a world class instrument.

His guitars sound way too expensive for a British maker, you could probably find an equally good guitar from an unknown maker in Andalusia for a fraction of the price, plus the re sale price of SH's guitars would be virtually nothing, as he is not well known

Hi Dave,

Been to Spain and tried it, the good makers don't have any available and the ones you get to try are the ones they have left over.
Best chance would be Valeriano Bernal, he builds from quite a big workshop with the whole family involved. I'm sure he would have something nice but I have to say SH guitars are special and comparable in price to VB concert guitars.

Agreed, £2000 is the going rate for a truly handmade guitar.

Yeh your probably right Jim, I was in a bit of a grumpy mood when I posted. £ 2000 plus seems to be the going rate these days. In 1995 I had a look at M Reyes workshop, and if I can remember, they were about 3 to 4 grand and a waiting list of about five years, I should think they will be £10,000 plus these days and a waiting list of 100 years?

Could you define what is a "Truly handbuilt guitar"? Has it something to do with the way you built the guitar? In this case I can find you guitars for half the price made by less known builders, Or has it something to do with the name of the builder? In this case you are almost right.

Sure...

1. From a luthier of reputation
2. Made by that luthier or an apprentice - they usually only have one or two apprentices.
3. Only light use of machines (bandsaw, drill press)
4. Hand finishing, sanding, polishing etc.
5. Decent set of tuners
6. Set up properly
7. 1st quality materials
8. Design and resulting sound
9. Signature, hand-made rosette - not bought in

Hi Simon.

Following your 9 points, may make it very difficult to find a guitar.

Point 1, the reputation does´t make a guitar more or less handbuilt, very often it´s the other way round.

The Spanish masters, very often have someone or more (not esp. apprentices) doing things for them. Such as cutting the neck joints and routing for the reinforcment. Making the bridge etc. It´s extremely normal. Called culture. They use a lot of machinery. The Rosette is normally designed by them, but then they send the design to Valencia or Korea, where someone´ll make 500+ items.

The most examples are the Madrid school guitars (Ramirez, Conde Hermano etc), where you´ll have no idea who made it.

You can still find people working like you would like it, but tehy are in general not reputated.

I talk about Spain. Elsewhere, you´ll find what you look fo, but you also pay for it.

No 1 is being polished. I think in 3 weeks it´ll be ready.

I´m planning to post fotos on the MIMF forum (fantastic place), but I´ll post some here as well if you want.

Soundfile. Well a little later on, and I´ve only got ****ty equipment.

Where are you in the process. It´s really addictive isn´t it. I hope I´ll be able to sell some, because if not I´ll have to move to a bigger house with more space for the guitars (and other instruments) that I´ll build

Of the end result, only the tuners, strings and rosette were made by someone else i.e. bought in. That's magic.
