Thanks for the idea, Romerito!

As I don't have much of a clue what's out there, just wanted to have some opinions from you guys. My 3 favs:

Pitingo con Habichuelas
Esperanza Fernandez (she's been working on a new one for quite some time now, I'm painfully waiting for it)
Angel Pastor - Todos hablarán de mi

Anyone else have some tips?

Ah heck put all your favorites up, as many as you like! Next time I get a raise or a bonus I'll order them all at once!

RE: Favorite modern cante albums (in reply to John O.

Hola

Angel de los Santos Pastor, de la familia de Agujetas, is one of my favourite traditional singers. He called me to a meeting with him and his primo Bernardo because he wanted me to produce this record. He is influenced by fashion and wanted percussion and modern instruments. I refused to produce it because I felt that his style of cante should be treated with respect. I recommended that he talk with Diego Magallanes who is also from the Barrio de Santa Maria , but aficionado de flamenquito and socio of the producer Paco Ortega.

He took the advice, but every time I listen to the record , it pains me to hear the production, for example the inappropiate piano solo in the middle of the seguiriyas.

The guitarist, Juani de la Isla is great and a record por derecho with just the two of them and palmas would have suited Angel much better.

I know where you're coming from, Sean. To be completely honest the title track is my favorite but the intro sounds like the intro to a game show . Can you or anyone recommend an album of his with little or no arrangments in case he's ever done one?

Thanks for the tips Romerito, Duende. Mir forma de vivir I have too, it's great. I'm looking for any and all cante. Every time the German magazine Anda comes out (every 2 months) I buy the couple of CD's they recommend. This way though I can get them all at once, hehe...

Some other favs:

José Mercé - Del Amanecer
Miguel Poveda - Viento del Este
La Tana - Tu, ven a mi
Mayte Martín - Querencia

RE: Favorite modern cante albums (in reply to Guest

Hi i have some more in addition to the others that were added, not mentioning the ones everyone expects to be great by now, Duquende, Potitio, El Cigala, Arcanghel etc..

Juaneke --- Chicuelo accompaning
Secundo falcon ---- Paco Jarana accompaning

But i really think is that what makes a album modern is not the cante is just the guitarist used, because that builds the air around the cante. Except for Pitingos album where they went the other way, the guitar was pretty simple and taimed (not meant in a criticising way, it worked perfect and it was done perfect), and the Cante was the most inovative

u can get the most traditional singer and put him in with a modern accompanist and it will be a modern cante album.

Hola

Angel has made one record only. He is talking about another but probably in a similar vein.

Ricardo Rivera, one of the best young guitarists from Cádiz, recently gave me a CD in which he participated and produced: Julián Estrada,Donde queda el puente, Montoya Musical, 2005. Guest guitarists, apart from Ricardo, are El Bolito and Manolo Franco.

Suerte

Diego Cigala's last album had 2 nice bulerias, one with Paco accomp and one with Tomatito.

The fusion project "Qawwali Flamenco" has a few nice straight ahead flamenco performances with Chicuelo, Duquende, and Miguel Poveda.

Oh sorry, those are RECENT releases. If you just mean favorites in a modern style?:

Camaron:Vivire
Indio Gitano: Naci Gitano...with Nunez.
Jose Merce: Amanacer with Vicente
Luis El Zambo:Gloria Bendita...actually he sings old style. But it is a "modern" recording, so really one of my favorites.
Pepe De Lucia:orgullo de me pare...not my favorite singer, but some great guests.
Remedios Amaya: Me Voy Contigo with Vicente. Now every girl singer sounds like this. But this was one of the first smooth recordings, nice playing and production, nice estribillos etc.
Carmen Linares with Gerardo: I like Gerardo so cool arrangements, but this Maestra has better recordings.
Duquende:Samaruco with Paco and Cañizares.

Well usually I run away whenever any singer open his mouth.

But I like some pieces, too. For example the tangos from Tomatito which his daughter sings. I like the CD "picasso" of Diego. And the alegrias on one of the first albums of nino de pura.

Duqende shouts too much.. As J. Merce. You can scare me with them...

Well.. And I like some old singing of these black and white videos from youtube.

La tana crys too much I think... I saw a gig of her some month ago and she trashed the whole concert with her shouting. It sounded like an angry old housewife...

I would never buy any music coz of a singer...

Del Amanecer (jose merce)
Samaruco (duquende)

Vivere /camaron
como el agua

i like the soundtrack to the movie "Agujetas" not modern but good with moraito

Yes, it has the seemingly obligatory Brazilian and/or Cuban type numbers, but it's all good. The soleá is great.

I am not so much into cante but for me the best male voices are from Duquende and Jose Merce.

And this is my favourite song with female voices! Falete and Nina Pastori
Beautiful

I also like Montse Cortes with Diego del Morao

I admit that normally i only hear cante if it is combined with nice guitar music and not only some Chords!!

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum. This was a useful thread. I discovered a few great new albums. I don't think anyone mentioned two of my favorites:

El Pele and Vicente Amigo: Canto; Poetas de Esquinas Blandas.

I heard these when I first started listening to flamenco past the usual solo guitar albums and it's what got me hooked into the cante. I also have to say my initial reaction was that Vicente is better when he's accompanying :)

Has someone listened to the !new! Juan Habichuela record? I'm very curious cause Juan is one of my favorite guitarists. If so, you can comment:)

1)I like Estrella Morente with ...who else...Juan habichuela. En lo alto del cerro......there was an video on you tube but it has dissapeared. In fact....I have to admit I'm secretly in love with this women............
2)Jose merce, but not for his singing but for Moraito
3) Pitingo con habichuela's except for the soul songs- too pop for me-
