Fun and games with Moraito last night

Melchor and I had a laugh with Moraito last night, after his London gig with Jose Merce (which was an awesome demonstration of flamenco entertainment). Everyone seems to know El Melchor Diaz!

I'll be posting an interesting video here, as soon as I can convert it to mpeg. It's worth waiting for

Later, Melchor and I met up with Fergus and his singer, Ulysses, for an impromptu juerga in a London pub.

ps. Emma, Robin sends his regards!

I arrived late and so missed the gig, Melchor and your good self said it was a good one. I remember seeing Jose Merce a few years ago in the barbican, he's a great singer and moraito well......
As for Ulises being 'my' singer, I wouldn't like to claim exclusive rights to his talent, we get together when we have the chance.
Speaking of get togethers when is melchor planning this crawley bash
See you in jerez

OK, so it's spelt Ulises and he is not yours but you were definitely wearing a silly hat.

Hi Simon any chance you can post the picture of Robin Moraito you and me?
The gig last night was great. We, the Spanish audience, made so much noise last night. I felt sorry for the old English couple in front of me. They must have thought where the hell or these people are coming from, the jungle?

For Moraito and Jose Merce ,well, they were great. So humble people. They invited me and my brother for a couple of beers. Moraito said next time I went to Jerez I shouyld look for him in the bar Arco de Santiago. That´s what I love about this guys . They are the same they were 15 years ago when they were not that famous.

The other gig at the pub well you know I was drunk and couldnt play but sure next time we are going to meet in Crawley and have a proper Spanish juerga.

Un saludo

Melchor

Hanging out with Moraito - photo (in reply to Melchor

Here's a photo from last night - the quality is more to do with the state of the roadie (or was it the cajon player?) than the camera

Left to Right: Melchor, Moraito, me and Robin Totton (author of Song of the Outcasts - An Introduction to Flamenco)

I see from Moratio's example I don't have exclusive rights to the 'silly hat'

What I would like to know is how a little guy like him can reach half way up the neck! I am working on some of his stuff and the stretches are killers to my old worn out hands.

How tall is Moraito, Melchor and Simon? I envy you guys. Next to Tomatito, Moraito is my fav! The Bar Arco is definately on my "to do" list when I get to Spain.

I'm 6' 2" but stooping in this one, so I would say Moraito is 5' 6" and not particularly large hands or long fingers.

You must have been stooping really low if he is 5'6". From his Encuentro video it appears his nails are very long. I lose all control if my nails get that long. Don't know how he does it.

Tom,

Maybe that's how he can do those ungodly long reaches. Maybe he has two-inch nails on his left hand and he uses them to press the strings!

A lot of people are short to me, I'll measure his height and get a close-up of his fingers and nails if we meet up in Jerez

Just an average London pub at Euston station.

Yes - would love to do it again in the Summer, pick and pub and start a juega

yes

No, he went off for a meal but that would be rather cool. I hope he's around in Jerez during the festival, maybe we'll get another one going with Moraito, dream on

Simon;

When Katy and I go to Spain, I am going to bring my Penny Whistle and Chanter (the part of a Bagpipe you blow into without bag) and play a bit of Irish music in a local bar. I will comment on the acceptance of the locals. In Galicia I think I have a better chance of not getting thrown out!
