I just had a brilliant idea !

To help ourselfs and others in the future deciding what guitar to buy we should compare guitars might be the best buying guide we have.

The idea is that we all do a litlle recording of out guitar doing the exact same thing , eg strum on the E chord, rasqueado on the E chord ,some notes whatever , i can write down in Tab what we all do and we all record it (With absoluteley no effects), we all write the Maker, Model of the guitar etc, whatever else might be relevant about the guitar.

AT the end of the day we will have a nice Guide to what some guitars models we wondered about soundlike.

I for one would be very interested to compare the guitars.

If you are in this just write down the Guitar Maker and Model you have below, il get started on writing down something for us all to play.

Mine is a T. Matsuoka Flamenco Model

That is a good idea Florain but keep in mind that two guitars that are the same model and come from the same maker may sound totally different. This depends on who's hands made it. Two Conde's may sound different but a maker who makes his guitars with his own hands have a better chance of being consistant.

I have a Vicente Carrillo blanca. Since I don't have recording equipment yet, maybe Miguel de Maria can put up the sound clip since he has the same guitar as mine.

Florian when I played classical I had a Matsuoka. Surprisingly good guitar!
Anyways, we already know Florian loves my guitar.

I know El Zurdo I dont expect any 2 guitars to sound exactly the same, but right now i have absolutely no clue except for mibe about 4 models what other guitars sound like.
It would just be use to get a general idea.

I am interested on things like which guitar sounds more precussive (i call it dry sound) which sounds more melodic (I call it wet sound), what models has good note separation, which one is louder clearer, (Very important which one sustains a note longer ).

I am sure that for myself and many others here who consider bying a guitar in the future this will help to give some idea of what guitar is " deeper sound" what guitar is "louder' etc.

Personaly i prefer my guitar somewhere in the middle between Classical and Flamenco sound.

Florian,
I think that the differences in recording equipment would make it very difficult to make a valid comparison. I could record Moraito's Conde on my computer with my cheap mic and it will sound like crap. Whereas, a fairly good, moderately priced guitar might have an absolutely excellent sound if recorded on Tom Whitely's system.

Florian,

I agree with Phil, but I am up for it anyway. I can do my Shelton blanca and Ramirez negra.

Phil,

When we all download this program, keep the mic. ca. 0,5 m from the sound hole in a straight direction, keep the recording level the same as anyone, then I think it's possible to compare the sounds.

Florian;

If you go to:

http://go.to/Zavaletas-guitars

you can listen to several guitars being used.

Here are some variables to take into account for this project:

1. The room in which the recording was made.

2. Strings used. Manufacturer, and tension are variables and will color the sound.

3. Microphone used.

4. Audio level attained (0 db max but not down towards the noise floor).

Perhaps my engineering background is an impediment to others and I do not mean to cast any negative concepts upon your idea. I think your idea is great and can help others to make decisions. Go for it!

Hi Thomas,

When the distance between guitar and microphone is ca. 10 cm, the background noise is not important anymore, even the type of strings is more or less a minority.

I agree with the 0dB.

I think we can do it

When everybody use a electret mike, cheep and sensitive, we will have a standard.
