El Mondao y su grupo

Hi folks,
I found a CD by these guys some years ago in the library and have continued to enjoy it since, and you might be able to get it for a bargain price on amazon -

Has anyone else heard of or gotten into these guys?
Are they just an example of a run-of-the-mill flamenco group?
The rasgueos and strumming are pretty tuff and tight. Being a newbie I can't tell if they play more than rumbas and sevillanas. I kind of feel like these guys are a gritty 'Andalucian' flamenco counter to the Gipsy Kings. I'm far, far, far from expert on cante, and, so far, not able to enjoy a lot of it, so I like being able to understand most of the words here, even if a little more rasp in Mondao's vox would be the icing on the cake.

I listened to all the disc one tracks (I think!) and you are spot on, they were mostly rumbas with a few Sevillanas in there. Certainly competent rumberos, but I would disagree that they are somehow grittier and more flamenco than the GKs. Actually I have to say that Reyes (the GKs singer) is MUCH more powerful.

In any case they would belong to the same genre and are not really typical of what most aficionados would see as a flamenco group.

BTW just to confuse you more, Sevillanas is considered by some not to be flamenco too

Yep, I had also heard that some people don't believe Sevillanas are true flamenco either

By gritty I meant that the production is quite raw and live-sounding, there's no reverb to speak of on the vocals, no synths, also that the vocal style (and maybe even the content) seems less 'pop' than what I know of the GK's - and I DO like the GK's, I just found these guys less poppy
