PDL's books

Anybody's tried PDL's official books, compared to Affedis. The former is definitely cheaper.

Fantasia and Fuente y Caudal are good. Fabulosa is NOT. Faucher is good, but ripping paco off in terms of credit/royality. That is why Paco is putting out his own publication. It is totally illegal for Faucher to be selling Paco's stuff.

I do not think it is illegal what Faucher does.
Only the audio is protected.
If Faucher is writing it down, than the writing is from Fauchner.

Thanks for the advice, Ricardo. I suppose I just can't have everything because of the price. There is just so much to choose from, together with all the Encuentro series and the like. Anyway, his music will take decades to come to anything near it. This is surely one of the reasons why Faucher has taken off from his catalogue, apart from the falsetas.

Incorrect. ANY form of reproduction without permission is illegal, and transcribing music into tab and/or notation is reproduction.

Faucher would own the copyright to his transcriptions, but he needs the consent of the copyright owner(s) of the orginal work in the first place. This could include the artist and the publisher of the original work (not all artists own their own publishing).

I am surprised that Faucher is publishing transcriptions without permission, he is leaving himself wide open for litigation. Its strange for someone so well known in the business to be doing that. Obviously it doesn't apply to his books, which are usually written with input from the artist.

Faucher is not selling them anymore. They are probablay in his private catalogue but not on the website. In any case, the site has not been updated for a long while even though he has some new materials.

It is illegal for him to write it down on paper, not to mention sell it. And he used to sell with the transcript, a cassette version of the piece transcribed. Sure it was cheap and helpfull, but all illegal I am afraid. Most flamenco's don't care about it, but nowadays they are starting to "mind". Especially since he started making his official print books. The royalites he collects on these and sends to the living artists, are so small they are insulting (at least of one artist I have heard of). As far as I understand, when PDL set up his own publishing company, his people told Faucher to stop selling his transc. of PDL. He removed them from advertising, but still offeres them "under the table".

To answer the first question. Yes. I've tried Fuente y Caudal and its good. its also very well presented and its nice and chunky so you feel like you've got plenty of material. Although I should say I haven't used it that much as its a bit too advanced for me.

Before getting that book, I picked up a book called "Paco de Lucia - Guitar Tab"

http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/035185/details.html

I must admit it was crap!! I should have guessed by the pictures on the front all of electric guitars getting thrashed.

A couple of the transcriptions were ok but some of them were way off. or if they weren't, then there was definately no indication of any alternative tunings used or capo postions. I took it back to the shop and the shop keeper refused to take it back.

Has anyone else had this book and what are there thoughts on it???

I have it - take a look at the inside cover and you will see two transcribers named. One of them is good - check out Cepa Andalus, Entre Dos Aguas for example, and the other guy's are supposed to be dreadful. I have only worked on the good guys stuff.

many many years ago, PDL's publisher had Jose Torregrosa or someone figure out some of the melodies on PIANO, so paco could get (c) royalites in addition to (p) royalites. They are separate things. In order to keep getting those royalties, the publisher has to KEEP REISSUEING the same bad transcriptions every few years. The latest version someone working for the company actually tabbed out some of that crap. That is just the way it goes guys. Making $ not art. Notice Torregrosa actual took COMPOSER CREDIT for a lot of Paco's early material, simply because he could notate those falsetas. I always thought that was pretty lame.

On the other hand FAUCHER has been doing acturate note for note transcriptions for years, and not giving a dime to the living or dead maestros, breaking the rules of this publishing business. All I can say is AT LEAST HE IS ACCURATE.

Hello!

Yep, the Fantasia book is very good because you have very good fingerings even for the right hand.
I also have the Fuente book and it is also great. But no fingerings for the right hand.......but if you are good enough to play that stuff you are also able to check out a good fingering.

Honestly, I am not

In the Fuente book, all those little letters "p a m i ñ" in itallics near the note heads, are the right hand fingerings.

I bought long time ago something from Spain called Lo mejor de Paco de Lucia for about £7. It was so crap that I put it to the bin almost straight away, it was a real ripoff, so I'm more careful about these publications.

As a matter of interest, why Fabulosa is not good. I didn't have a chance to examine this book so I can't really tell. As to Fuente, I had a very quick glance inside, I noticed that in Entre Dos Aguas, the open base strings introduction A E A E A A# B etc is missing. Am I correct?

That's not a guitar part, that's played by an upright bass. You won't find the congas transcribed either
