Video

I got a copy of a fantastic video last week, well when I say fantastic, I mean the content is fantastic, the quality suffers from being 2nd or even 3rd generation.
It's a compilation of various guitarists recorded at different times from Melchor de Marchena to Tomatito. It's got Sabicas playing some terrific stuff including a beautiful Solea and a nice clip of Melchor sitting listening to Enrique on the couch in his home and smiling in praise as Enrique knocks out some complex pulgar falsetas por Solea.
A young Tomatito plays some buleria and Diego del Gastor does the same.
Anyway,
If someone can tell me how to transfere this vidio onto my computer so that I can burn a CD of it, and if it's easy enough to do, I'd happily make copies and send these out to all the Forum Members (belated Christmas presents to you all)
Back to the video!
Cheers
Jim.

It's pretty straightforward, if you have the gear. You need a tv capture card, like a £40 Hauppage from PC World, a fast processor and a fair amount of memory. Then you can use something like Windows Movie Maker under Windows XP Home Edition. There are other software packages that will create WMA, MPEG or AVI

Alternatively, I have all the gear if you want if you send me a VHS copy, I can burn to CD in Windows Media format. It'll fit, no problem.

Here's one I did from Herrero's solea video http://www.foroflamenco.com/articles/Herrero/Herrero%20Solea.WMV

I can probably encode to AVI or MPEG - Anyway, I think I have a DVD burner in the new machine I am getting on Sunday. That would sort it.

Thanks Simon,
I'll get the card and have a go this end, it would be good to get a system up and running.
If I get stuck, I'll send the video to you.
Copies to everyone hopefully soon.
Cheers
Jim.

Simon,
How's the new computer?
I recored some MPEG's with my Sony camera just to try things out, but they're huge! 20MB for about 30-45 seconds. Is that normal?
At that rate I'd need NASA to copy over the video (mmm!..maybe not)
Cheers
Jim.

Jim,
That sounds like it might be a copy of one (or a part) of the 'Ritos y Geografia del Flamenco' videos. There's one that features Melchor de Marchena and at one point shows him at home with a very young, geeky looking Enrique playing some marvelous stuff. Melchor said during the interview that Enrique was playing his own material and that Enrique's technique was better than his. Enrique couldn't have been more than 16 years old in that video. Very impressive.

Someone sent me (unsolicited BTW) a very poor copy of the 'Rito' series. I found that the whole guitar series is available on 4 DVDs for about 107 Euros. They feature Pdl, Pepe Habichuela, Serranito, etc. when they were very young, and people like Diego de Gastor, Manuel Morao, and Melchor de Marchena. It's really a good buy.

Phil

If it's available for purchase and under copyright, I would advise against making and distributing copies.

Hi Phil,
That sounds like the one, I'll look out for the DVD.
My version looks home made and I thought it was a one off! I take Simon's point about copyright.
Cheers
Jim.

Jim,
The 4 DVD set 'Rito y Geografía del Toque' is available at Flamenco-World for 99.90 euros.
