Advice and help for a newb 1 votes

Greetings guys,

I've been observing this great forum for awhile now in my attempt to learn more about Flamenco. I've been playing guitar since my youth but have become (in the last year or so) very fascinated with Flamenco. Long story short, I put all of my other guitars away for a long nap and bought a descent Esteve to start learning on. After playing with a pick for so long, learning this new form is like staring all over.....a very humbling experience to say the least.

Anyway, I have been gleening some info from books by Graf Martinez and Juan Martin, but they just don't have that old school Flamenco sound or feel. Not like Sabicas, Del Gastor, Paco...etc,etc. Believe me, I am far from playing anything from these greats I have mentioned.

Can some of you guys please give me some advice as I start my long journey at learning Flamenco. Is there a certain palo I should just stay with for awhile...like a Solea or ?. Any kind of help would be appreciated....and if you have any easy Tabs in PDF form that would be great as well.

Hi Nylonnewbie

Acctualy i really do think Juan Martins book is the best way to start, imo it does have that trad feeling, but the best thing about it is that it starts slow and at the beginning, its less confusion.

his book is put togheder quite well, it has everything, audio examples, photos, exercises and solos.

unless u get the dvd ans thats even better.

Yeah the Juan martin book is a good place to start if that is the only way u can start. I would really try and find someone in your area to get lessons from but i know how hard that is.... In regards to what palo's u should start with, well: Sevillianas, Tientos and Solea is always a good place to start, remember learn the rhythm and learn it slowly and learn it well.... good luck amigo...

Paco Pena´s "Toques Flamencos", Manuel Granados "Manual didáctico de guitarra flamenca" and maybe Oscar Herrero's DVDs might be worth checking out as well.

I think that at the early stages, nothing can compare to a real teacher showing the special techniques of the flamenco guitar. You should definitely try to find someone who is skilled (not some "i can teach all from Jazz to flamenco" type). You didnt write where you are located though?

Mucho thanks to all of you guys for your replys..........I do appreciate it. The advice about Juan Martins studies just confirms the fact that I need to stick with the basics. You know the old addage " You have to crawl before you can walk", well I guess I need to stay on the floor for awhile eh. I do have a teacher who is keeping me grounded in the basics. Even to the point of holding the guitar in the traditional Flamenco style instead of a more comfortable (to me) classical style, between the legs.

Anyway, the reason I asked for your help is because this is the best forum I have found on Flamenco and all of the members are true players just having fun with the (art/music) form they love. Kind of like one big international Flamenco family and that's the way it should be...........thanks again!
