Anyone play cajon?

Whazzup fellow flamenco playazz,

does anybody here play or have a cajon? I'm thinking about getting one for a christmas gift(probably self gift one to myself also ). I'd also like to make one, once I see how a nice one is constructed.

Anyway, if you have one, let me know where you picked it up. Flamenco-World seems to have a few to select from. Any info appreciated; lookin' for something nice, not a wooden box with a hole.

I also heard that the really nice ones don't have strings por dentro. I've looked at few in spain, they all had strings inside. Strings or no strings, let me know whatcha got or whatcha know. Later.

Hey Yakko
I have 4 cajones I made em all myself
Its easy and its fun to do
I made each one a different size and they each sound different
I used whats called aircraft plywood (available at quality wood stores)
its birch plywood
The sides back and top and bottom are half inch....
the back is quarter inch and the fronts are one eighth
The best sounding is the typical size small
then I made each of the others a little bigger
with larger size they get deeper in sound ( of course)
I dont regret having them but if its only one one you want ....stay small
These things are a must for any flamenco
Instant drum set...... sit on em and play
What works good for me ..
is to use a snare from a normal snare drum
I experimented with different locations on the front (use duct tape temporarily)
just to cut to the chase....
there is alot of fun to have with a cajon
c
ps ...Ive had my Jose Pena Rodreguez for a few months now....LOVE IT

Hi

I saw a Cajon once tht had guitar strings on the inside of the front panel to give it that snare drum effect, worked pretty good..infact is was made by someone who knew what he was doing...

Hope this helps too

c,
That's cool you made you're own! I've been thinking about making one for a while, and I will when I get a chance. It will take quite a bit of experimenting I suspect, but I think it will be fun.

Hey, if you have any recording gizmos, you should post sound clips of your JPR. I'd like to hear it. It's become one of my favs; I definately play it more than the others lately.

Hola ykabban,
Have a look at this site posted by another member a bit back- www.ocanartesania.com. It actually gives you dimensioned plans on how to build a cajon. I fitted a spring from a snare drum inside mine which works well.

hi ykabban, watch out it doesnt play havic with your guitar playing. Every time i had a muck around on a cajon and then tried to play it really made my hands sore and it was hard to play guitar. But maybe once you have calaisis its o.k. Although it may build calaisis in the wrong parts of the hands for guitar, im not sure.
