This guy is from Chicago and we got sent the link to his CDBaby site. I wonder if he had met us there on tour or perhaps he just sent this link to all the flamenco artists at CDBaby. Anyway I'll never know as despite bothering to send me the link he didn't bother to reply to my email.

Estela and I were discussing this album as she has been staying with me for the flamenco festival here in Granada. She went to the presentation in Jerez so I'll leave her to give her own opinion.

Mine is that the guy is using the "origins of flamenco are Mesopotania' as a marketing tool which is a bit of a con as he has absolutely nothing to substantiate this wild claim which instantly turned me off. I heard nothing in the music to back it up, it sounds like Middle eastern singing with Moraito on guitar, a fusion record and not some great musical discovery.

Talking of Moraito it was nice to see him play the first night of the festival alongside Jose Merce, just the two of them.

The next night Los Faraones, singers and friends of mine from Granada were also excellent with Rafa Santiago and Emilio Maya on guitar and five of Granada's best male singers, all working together to great effect. Estela wrote it up for deflamenco.com so have a look at her review as I am biased as we are making an album with them once Emilio's first solo album is complete. Not long now though we keep getting delayed due to the fact Emilio gigs non stop. He also accompanied the dancer Fuensanta the following night at the festival.

That night Diegito played and I just loved his playing. So different to anything i had heard before. It reminded me of more traditional Gypsy music, as oppsed to flamenco, like you find in Eastern Europe. I described it to Estela as hurdy gurdy, if that makes any sense to anyone. Afterwards we all went to the Peña till the wee hours and had a wonderful time.

Another singer that night was Chano Lobato who just knocked me out with cante from Cadiz.

Estela and I talked about our plans to come to Jerez for the festival and I am looking forward to hearing more flamenco and discovering new treasures. Is that still being planned ?

I spoke with Melchor on Sunday and he is going to Jerez in January - he'll check out accomodation options then. I am planning on going.

Regards to Harold and un embrazo to you and Estela.

Hi Kate,

Very interesting reply. I mainly wanted to get this CD because Moraito is on it.

Wow, Merce,Moraito,Chano and Dieguito all playing in the festival. Wish I could be there to see these greats. I admire these men emensly.

I enjoyed Moraito's playing, and what was even better was getting a chance to hang out at the soundchecks and see everyone relaxed and getting ready and having a chance to chat. Diegito is a real caracter. Jose Merce has a smile that lights up a room. Antonio Canales sort of oozes 'superstar'. Chano Lobato told stories and I wish I could have understood half of what he was saying, especially the story about Bacalo ( cod) which had everyone else falling about laughing.

When Estela checks into the forum ask her to tell you all about the Peña del Ni~õ de las Almendras where I took her at 3am. Steve Kahn once described it like falling down the rabbit hole and Estela said she had never seen anything quite like it. The most surreal Peña in the world but Dieguito would have fitted in perfectly.

Maybe the music is good, but I think the history he describes may be totally false. For one thing, he seems to claim that the gitano language (calo) is derived from Mesapotamian Aramaic. That's the language that Jesus read/wrote in. But I'm almost certain it is actually derived from the ancient Sanskrit language from India. Aramaic was more from the Iraq region and west of there than from the region of India.

Also if you look at the ancient art works, the Assyrians were famous for their enormous beards for which they were very proud. All Assyrian men seem to have had them. That tradition doesn't seem to be prevalent in any of the gypsy tribes.

Additionally, there are documented court records of a Persian king advertising a call for court musicians from Indian and a surplus of over 2000 of them showed up for the job and moved west instead of returning home.
