I play modern cuz I like it but I am a Diego del Gastor fan for that reason. Thumb and Rasgueado-one of the most popular schools is based on only that.
I like thumb and rasgueado too. A lot of folk think that it must only be primitive stuff, (Diego del Gastor, Manuel Morao etc...but not neccessarily so. There are lots of examples of great falsetas by even such illustrious players such as Paco, Tomatito etc... that very good and experienced "all round" guitarists would have a great deal of difficulty playing effectively.

Yes, i do and i admire people who get to the point without using to much embellishment. But on the other hand i love Manolo Sanlucar so what it comes down, for me, is that i like guitarists with a very personal style, no matter if they play modern, traditional, hard or soft.
Yes I agree with you, the thumb is so important, it has an amazing earthy sound that is so flamenco. And on a flamenco guitar it has a wonderful sound..like in Vicentes Morente. the first two chords are played with the thumb and he gets such an earthy sound!

Anyhows as for the tinkling, or "flojo" Im pretty much old school, but my teacher was quite strict, and whenever we had a rasguado before a arpeggio or picado section, he would say "PLAY THE RASGUADO SOFTER!, other wise the next section will sound weak"
And its true if you belt it out, the next section will sound weak.... PDL overcomes this by having a period of silence after a strong rasguado and then breaks into a furious picado session...and hence it sounds strong...(not to mention he has a good mike turned up full at hand to boost the sound)...
Weak as you say, is not good for flamenco, if playing with/for dancers, singers and cajon players...unless your miked up.
IMO it is a result of solo playing where the guitarist tries his/her best to be all things, the guitarist (accompaniement), the dancer (copying the feet), the singer (playing the melody),
The guitar has losts of weaknesses and limitations that the soloist has to contend with. And this sometimes means losing something to gain something....but hey what do i know ..,.
