quote:
Juan, like Esteban, seems to attract a certain type of fanatical and irrational follower. Some people don't have much in the brains department, and sometimes if a famous musician says something nice to them they become their loyal disciples. This person here even seems to think that Juan is a better flamenco guitarist even than Grisha. So I can't take his lack of taste or judgement too personally. I'm sure people can go to my website and evaluate my sound samples with their own taste. Juan is my friend (I'm doing his concerts in Poland) and my idol as a professional musician. It's not a coincidence he's almost as famous in the world as Paco de Lucia (not everywhere but in lots of countries). He recorded lots of albums full of tuneful pieces and even one great moorish-flamenco album (which attracted millions of fans from Arab countries). He also records albums like Camino Latino and Rumbas for non-flamencos, who are attracted by that. He can also play very good pure flamenco - I'll shortly upload Tarantas from his concert in Turkey to the Audio/Video section, I got it for promotion purposes from Juan. I hope he won't mind :) Everyone will have an opportunity to rate it, to place their in-depth opinions, instead of just saying Juan is a rumba playing circus-man, etc. without giving good reasons. I ddin't say Juan is better than Grisha. Where have I said that? Besides, Grisha didn't criticize Juan, he did rather opposite. quote:
Im sure im not as good as juan but that doesnt mean i can´t chose other guitarists before him. Everyone can choose any guitarists, but I just can't stand someone insulting him as a musician - that he can't collect enough rumbas (or other toques) for his album or that he just can play funny rumbas. I could agree he's not that technically good as many flamenco players (he doesn't play fast picados as most younger players or such tremolos as Nunez), but I admire the aire, the flow and the melodic values of his compositions - it's very flamenco (pure flamenco) to me. Moreover, he plays very hard and loud, it's not that easy to play more complicated pieces that way. Regarding rumbas and rattling purses: Juan doesn't like to play rumbas in his concerts, but the public wants to hear it, he says that e.g. La Feria is not flamenco enough, and he's more into playing the major toques. And what's the worst, many poeple here laugh at him, while probably he had bigger impact on promotion of flamenco to the world (especially in eastern europe,middle-east and Asia) than Paco de Lucia. So whatever is his flamenco value to you - Miguel de Maria - you should show some respect for such contributor to flamenco music as Juan.
