I live not to far from Berkeley where Montalvo's shop is and I visit the shop once in a while. He has beautiful guitars. He does not make them him self, what he and his son do is they import the guitars from Paracho mexico. Actually he hired a luthier in Paracho to make his guitars, when they are made he personaly inspectes them him self and picks the best to sell under his name in his shop in california. The guitars are modeled and made after other well know models like Torres, Hauser and Ramirez.
The guitars which include classicals and flamencos and very well made and for the money it is a good investment. Also his flamencos have been purchased and used by artist like Strunz and Farah, Lara and Reyes, Esteban, Jason and that dude from Metalica.
I have been wanting to buy his Torres style negra flamenca which I fell in love with one day at the store, I am hoping net year. I only wish he change his label to make it look more profesional but dont let that fool you these are very well made quitars and his list of clientel can prove that.
I hope this helps, If you have more questions I can get you in contact with some one else that Montalvo uses to break in the guitars and he knows alot more then what I know.
