I know of this luthier in BC who is making a name for himself by selling good quality hand-made flamenco/classical guitars for as low as $1000. I have a friend who bought one for $850 and had it shipped to Toronto. He is very very happy with the guitar.
850 Canadian dollars is about £400... thats a SUPERB deal for a hand made Flamenco guitar! (assuming the guitar is any good, that is...)

Doc, I think, apart from getting some basic advice, so that you don't get conned, or waste your money... I really think all this "best guitar" stuff, is like discussing the boots that the best football (soccer) players use. In real life, to the ordinary guy, it ain't gonna make too much of a difference, apart from prestige of ownership. Concentrate on your skills meanwhile. The guitars can come later...

Ron is right. I happen to own a great Gerundino and am a really poor guitarist. Sometimes I lend it to a young gaditano guitarist who has an important gig, but a mediocre guitar. Then I go along to hear it played properly.
I love it and would never sell it, but learning to play well enough that I would lend it to you is more important.

Too little too late... I already ordered a LMII serviced Flamenco kit yesterday. I'm really psyched up to try to build a guitar. This will seriously be a fun project to work on. I'll create a journal with detailed pics when I get started.

Its just a thought, Doc... but don't get your hopes up too high with this "kit guitar" thing. Lets wait and see how the guitar sounds when its finished. Although for one reason or another, I'd bet its nowhere near as good as a quality luthier-made guitar.

Oh, I'm not putting high hopes into it... I'm just hoping that it will sound better than a Yamaha CG171SF ;)
Seriously... I just want a project to work on. I haven't done much in the past 5 years other than studying, training, working, playing little guitar now and then and wasting my time in clubs ... it's time to start something, to have a goal and attempt to achieve it the best I can.
I plan on using the greatest care in the building process, using any junk wood to practice on until I'm ready to transpose tje job on the guitar. If I screw up something, I'll buy the screwed part and start again. There's no failing... I wont let it happen.

In all honesty, even this hope is quite ambitious for a first guitar. Unless you have the woodwork skill of a carpenter, and the years of experience of a luthier, just be happy that it looks (and sounds) like a guitar.
I also checked out the price of the lmii Flamenco kit- $450 (US)?! If you're looking for a good guitar for that price, the Yamaha would have been the way to go.
But it all depends on you, I suppose. Good luck!!!

True... I'd get a Yamaha for about the same price I got the serviced kit, but you fail to see my point. I'm totally distant from the first post of this thread... I'm not looking for the perfect budget guitar anymore, I just want something fun to do.
I just want to build because it is an interesting project, no matter the result. If I have to build 3-4 guitars to get a nice result, so be it. Buying the Yamaha to replace it later wont teach me much. The outcome of building a guitar is much more gratifying though.
Anyways, I'll just do the best I can and that's all that matters, doing your best. If I never give it a shot, I'll never know.

Well, I admire your attitude, Doc. I always say that its not until you actually try making a guitar for yourself, that you begin to fully appreciate the guitar/s you own. I think the process will teach you a lot about guitars, and even if your first guitar is not "perfect" it will, hopefully, be at least playable. And where you take it from there is up to you... the sky's the limit, within reason.
